(') In Macky's " Characters " he is thus spoken of when 5G years old. " Never was in action [thro'] all King William's reign, but left, by that Prince, his General of all the the forces in England when his Majesty went abroad. He is one of the hottest, fiery men in England, which was the reason King William would never give him any command when there was action. When the present Queen concluded the treaty with Portugal this gentleman was chosen to command the forces there and hail the Garter, but, not knowing how to keep measures with the Kings of Spain and Portugal, was recalled. He is brave but capricious ; of a fair complexion." Burnet [" Own Time "] calls him "Too haughty ;" but the Jacobite Earl of Ailesbury [" Memoirs "] speaks of him as " That ever renowned and brave gentleman . . . now 80 years of age, tall and proper, of a most affable behaviour, and as fine a courtier as he was a soldier." His portrait " after Sir G. Kneller " is engraved in Doyle. ( b ) See p. 82, note " d," as to the English honours.
