PROPOSITION 12. PROBLEM.

To erect a straight line at right angles to a given plane, from a given point in the plane.

Let A be the given point in the given plane: it is required to erect a straight line from the point A, at right angles to the plane. From any point B without the plane, draw BC perpendicular to the plane; [XI. 11.
and from the point A draw AD parallel to BC, [I. 31.
AD shall be the straight line required.

For, because AD and BC are two parallel straight lines, [Constr.
