tor of Schools, Madras; b. 1873; educ: Pachaiyappa’s High School, Madras, and the Presidency College, Madras; B.A., 1893; had a double first class in English and History; B.L., 1897; apprenticed to Mr. (now Hon’ble Mr. Justice) Kumaraswami Sastri; enrolled as Vakil, 1898; won the Norton Gold Medal and the Powel Vernacular Prize for Tamil composition and essay writing; one of the founders of the Suguna Villasa Sabha, the leading amateur dramatic society in Madras; takes an active and leading part in amateur theatricals; is the author of a Tamil drama which has been prescribed by the Madras University as a text-book; is a prominent member of the Madras South Indian Athletic Association; Dharmakarta of the Mylapore Temple; Trustee of the Annadana Samajam; Director, Mylapore Hindu Permanent Fund and also of the Central Urban Bank; a past Master of Lodge ‘Carnatic’, of which his father was one of the founders. Sambasiva Iyer, V. S., B.Sc., L.C.E., b. 1862; joined service as Assist ant Professor of Chemistry, Presidency College, Madras, 1892; Assistant Lecturer, College of Agriculture, Madras; joined Mysore Geological Department as an apprentice, 1895; Assistant State Geologist, 1897; Lecturer in Geology, Central College, Bangalore, 1900; Curator, Geological Museum, 1903; has lectured on Geological subjects before the South Indian Association, Madras, and has reported on Mining potentialities of Zamindaries in Southern India and of the Baroda State. Publication: Industrial Survey of Mysore State. Recreations: Gardening. Address: Shankarpur, Bangalore City, Mysore State, India.

Samman, Herbert Frederick, I.C.S., Bengal; educ: at Edward Six’s School, Stratford-on-avon, and Emmanuel College, Cambridge; passed I.C.S. Examination, 1890; joined service and arrived in India, 1892; Assistant Magistrate and Collector, Bengal, for some time; transferred as Assistant Commissioner to Assam, 1874; re-transferred to Bengal service, 1897; Joint Magistrate and Collector, 1904. Publications: A Monograph on the Cotton fabrics of Assam.
