SONGS
Of
INNOCENCE
and Of
EXPERIENCE
Shewing the Two Contrary States
of the Human Soul
The general title-page to both series of the Songs, issued together as one work. This plate was probably engraved after Oct. lo, 1793, when Blake issued his prospectus 'To the Public'
Omitted in the editions of DGR, WMR, EY, and WBY; Shep. writes 'showing' for 'shewing.' In notes DGR and WBY incorrectly read Songs of Innocence and Experience.
In the MS. Book (p. 101) are two stanzas entitled 'Motto to the Songs of Innocence & of Experience,' which, under the title 'A Motto,' W. M. Rossetti prefixes to the Songs in the Aldine edition. These lines, however, were never engraved or published by Blake, nor are they known to occur as an inscription in any copy of the Songs.
