PART II

General Directions


1. These Directions may be cited as "The Traffic Signs General Directions 1981".

2. The Traffic Signs General Directions 1975[1] are hereby revoked.

3. In these Directions the expressions "hours of darkness". "motorway", "primary route", "non–primary route", "road marking", "stud", "the Regulations of 1964" and "temporary statutory provision" have the same meanings as they have in the Traffic Signs Regulations 1981 (hereinafter in these Directions referred to as "the Regulations" and the expression "principal road" has the meaning assigned to it by section 84B(8) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act, 1967.

4.(1) Any reference in these Directions to a diagram by a number is a reference to the diagram of that number in any of the Schedules to the Regulations

(2) Any reference in these Directions to any sign shown in a diagram being a diagram in any of the Schedules to the Regulations shall be construed as including a reference to any such sign varied in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations,

5. Without prejudice to section 64 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act, 1967

(1) wherever a Sign shown in diagram 734.7 or in any or the diagrams 837.1 to 838.2 is to be placed or the first time at any given size on or near a primary route, that sign shall not be so placed unless the site shall have first been approved in writing by or on behalf or the Secretary of State; and

(2) whenever the sign shown in diagram 601.1 is to be placed for the first time at any given size on or near any road whatsoever, that sign shall not be so placed unless the site shall have first been so approved as aforesaid, except that if the said site shall already have been duly so approved for placing the sign shown in diagram 601 in schedule 1 to the Regulations of 1964, its replacement by the sign shown in diagram 601.1 shall be treated as a placing otherwise than for the first time for the purposes of this sub-paragraph.

6.(1) Except as provided by the next following sub-paragraphs, signs shown in diagrams 606, 607, 609, 612 to 614, 616, 617 to 622.2, 622.4 to 625.1, 626.1 to 632, 636 to 640.5, 640.2, 640.3 to 640.5, 641 to 644, 646, 647, 650 to 656.1, 660 to 662, 712, 712.1, 719 2, 719.3A, 729.1, 729.2, 760, 751, 801.3 to 801.5, 806.0 808.3. 810, 810.1, 812.1 to 812.4, 818.2 to 819.3, 1016.1 to 1021, 1025.1, 1025.3, 1028.1, 1032, 1033, 1036.1, 1036.2, 1037.1, 1043 to 1050, 5001 to 5004 may be placed on or near a road only to indicate the effect of an Act of Parliament, Order, Regulation, Bye-law or Notice which prohibits or restricts the use of the road by traffic.
