BUR EAU OF ORDNANCE ORD NANC E AND ORDN ANCE STORE S, B UREAU OF O RDNAN CE For procuring, producing, preserving, and handling ordnance material, for the armament of ships ; for the purchase and manufac- ture of torpedoes and appliances ; for the purchase and manufacture of smokeless powder ; for fuel, material, and labor to be used in the general work under the cognizance of the Bureau of Ordnance ; for furnitu re at naval ammunition depots, torpedo stations, naval ord- nance plants, and proving grounds ; for technical books ; plant appli- ances as now defined by the "Navy Classification of Accounts" ; for machinery and machine tools ; for accident prevention ; for experi- mental work in connection with the development of ordnance mate- rial for the Navy ; for maintenance of proving grounds, powder factory, torpedo stations, gun factory, ammunition dep ots and naval ordnance plants, and for target practice ; not to ex ceed 15,00 0 for minor improvements to buildings, grounds, and appurtenances of a character which can be performed by regular station la bor ; fo r pa y- ment of part time or intermittent employment in the District of Columbia, or elsewhere of such scientists and technici sts as may be contracted for by the »ecretary of the Navy in his discretion at a rate of pay not exceeding $20 per diem for any person so employed ; for the maintenan ce, repa ir, and o peration of horse -drawn an d motor-propelled freight and passenger-carrying vehicles . to be used only for official purposes at naval ammunition depots, naval proving grounds naval ordnance plants, and naval torpedo stations ; for the pay of chemists, clerical, drafting, inspection, and messenger service in navy yards, naval stations, naval ordnance plants, and naval ammunition depots, and for care and operation of schools at ord- ilance stations at Indianhead, Maryland ; Dahlgren, Virginia ; and South Charleston, West Virginia, $21,700,000 : Provided, That the sum to be paid out of th is ap propr iatio n for empl oyees assi gned to group IV (b) and those performing similar services carried under native and alien schedules in the Schedul e of Wages for Civil Em- ployees in the Field Service of the Navy Department shall not exceed $1,300,000 .
