C'., title 34, sec . 983), $10,000 ; payment of six months' death gratuity, $150,000 ; in all, $159,885,117 ; and no part of such suin shall be available to pay active-duty pay and allowances to officers in excess of nine on the retire d list, except retired officers temporarily ordered to active duty as members of retiring and selec- tion boards as authorized by law : Provided, That, except for the public quarters occupied by the Chief of Office of Naval Operations, the Superintendent of the Naval Academy, and the Commandant of the Marine Corps and messes temporarily set up on shore for offi cers attac hed t o seag oing vesse ls, to avia tion units based on s ea- going vessels including officers' messes at the fleet air bases, and to landing forces and expeditions, and in addition not to exceed forty in number at such places as shall be designated by the Secretary of the Navy, no appropriation contained in this Act shall be available for the pay, all owan ces, or o ther exp enses of any enli sted man or civil employee performing service in the residence or quarters of an officer or officers on shore as a cook, waiter, or other work of a char- acter performed by a household servant, but nothing herein shall be con str ued as prev enti ng the vol unta ry e mpl oyme nt in any such capacity of a retired enlisted man or a transferred member of the Fle et N aval Rese rve with out a ddit iona l exp ense to the Gover nmen t, Enlisted men .
