THE VOCABULARY OF MENANDER

Explanation of the List in Chapter III

In the following chapter are contained all words used by Menander which do not appear in the selected list of Attic writers. These words have been traced through the rest of the literature by means of the general and special lexicons and indices which have been mentioned in detail above, pp. 7ff. At the end I have noted a few words intentionally omitted from the list, with the reasons for their omission, together with a few statistical summaries concerning the words in the list, and some corrections of Liddell and Scott.

For the Attic writers accepted as standard in this work see above, pp. 9ff. As was explained there, I at first included in this list words used by Plato but not by the other writers of the selected list. Although Plato stands approved by the tests in chapter II, it has seemed best to retain these words, and it is hoped that the collections of instances may prove useful. However, from the strict point of view of the non-Attic elements in Menander's vocabulary, these words should be left out of consideration; see the summary at the end of the chapter.
