Μένανδρος τὸ μεθύειν ἐν τῇ Ἀσπιδι. Etym. Or. 56.6. Eubul. 56.6 K. Alex. 86.3 K. [Luc.] Amor. 12. Georg. Progymn. ap. Walz, Rhet. Gr. I 583.9. This use only here. It is to be classed with slang usages.

γαστρίζω Perik. 98 Körte. Phryn. 94 L., 178 R. γαστρίζειν ἐπὶ τοῦ ἐμπίπλασθαι λέγουσιν Ἀθηναῖοι, οὐκ ἐπὶ τοῦ τὴν γαστέρα τύπτειν. μήποτε δὲ καὶ ὁς οἱ πολλοὶ λέγουσιν, χρῶνται οἱ ἀρχαῖοι καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ τὴν γαστέρα τύπτειν. See Th. M. 74.1; Lex. Rhet. ap. B.A. 229.12. Poll. 2.175 approves of both uses. See Hesych., Etym. Magn. 222.2, Suid., Zonar. Lex. 423, Eust. 1881.53. Rutherford l. c. says "In the Attic which has come down to us the verb is used only in the sense which the Grammarian reprehends. . . . Perhaps in this place, as certainly in some others, the text of Phrynichus has been tampered with, and the words discussed transposed. . . . In either case the remark is of no value. Hesych. γίγγρος· αὔλημά τι, ὅπερ ἔνιοι γίγγρον· οἱ δὲ αὐλοῦ γένος. γίγγρας Poll. 4.76, 102. Eust. 1157.42. Ath. l. c. cites γίγγρας from Amphis (14 K.). At 174 A he quotes γιγγραίνοις from Xenophon, but the word has not been found in the latter's works. Kaibel emends to ὁ Τρύφων. γίγγρας Tryphon ap. Ath. 618 C. Adj. γιγγραντός Axionic. ap. Ath. 175 B (3 K.).

γιγνώσκω know carnally 558 K. This meaning appears in Lex. Rhet. ap. B.A. 233.19, and in Hesych. s. v. γνῶναι. Lxx Gen. 4.1, 17, 25; 19.8; al. Heraclid. de Polit. 32 p. 25.9 Schneidewin. NT Matt. 1.25; Luke 1.34. Plut. Vit. 583 D; 638 C; al. Acta Thom. p. 259.12 Bonnet. Clem. Al. Strom. 3.72.1. Philostr. Min. Imag. 1 p. 863 K. Heliod. Aeth. 1.8. Similarly cognosco in Latin, e. g. Ovid Her. 6.43, 133. Tac. Hist. 4.44. Vulg. Gen. 4.1, 17, 25; Matt. 1.25. In Isae. 3.10 this meaning has been incorrectly assigned to νῶναι by some commentators.
