  • Edward Everett
  • Mr. Seward
  • Mr. Winthrop

A more severe division of the country, including the term "secession", was favored by

  • Mr. Garrison
  • Mr. Wendell Phillips
  • Mr. Edmund Quincy
  • Theodore Parker

An intermediate party cofounded by the author's father Charles F Adams Sr included:
