Many notables and a couple of school of thoughts here circa 1850. These are inferences by econterms (talk). Favoring unity with the South, one group:
- Mr. Webster -- probably Daniel Webster

A more severe division of the country, including the term "secession", was favored by
- Mr. Garrison
- Mr. Wendell Phillips
- Mr. Edmund Quincy
- Theodore Parker
An intermediate party cofounded by the author's father Charles F Adams Sr included:
- John G. Palfrey
- Richard H. Dana
- Charles Sumner
- and maybe his friend William M Evarts too.
