William Bawdwen was a graduate of St. Andrews University, Edinburgh. He sold the family home, Stone Gap, to the Sidgewick family in 1794. The Sidgewicks' governess Charlotte Bronte modeled Gateshead Hall in "Jane Eyre" on Stone Gap.

William Bawdwen is buried in the churchyard at Hooton Pagnell. He was married twice, first to Anne Shackleton of Wakefield and fathered 10 children; second to Susannah Longstaff and fathered 3 daughters.
