  1. கூகைக்குப் பகலில் கண் தெரியாது.
    An owl cannot see in the day-time.
  2. கூகை விழித்தாற்போல விழிக்கிறான்.
    He stares like an owl.
  3. கூடக் குடி இருந்துகொண்டு கொள்ளி சொருகலாமா?
    Whilst residing with one shall we thrust a firebrand into his house?
  4. கூடத்தைக் கொடுத்தாலும் மாடத்தைக் கொடுக்கல் ஆகாது.
    Although you may give an outer room, it is not proper to give an inner one.

  11. கூத்தரிசி குத்துகிற வீட்டில் வாய்க்கு அரிசிக்கு வழி இராது.
    In the house where rice is pounded for sale, there is not enough to put into the mouth of a corpse.
    Before a corpse is removed the females of the family place a little raw rice near the mouth, the males do the same in the cemetry before the body is laid on the pyre.

    Will the art of fencing avail in a battle-field?
  13. கூத்தாடிக்குக் கீழே கண் கூலிக்காரனுக்கு மேலே கண்.
    A rope-dancer directs his eye downwards, one who bears a burden upwards.
  14. கூத்திக்கு இட்டுக் குரங்கு ஆனான் வேசிக்கு இட்டு விறகு ஆனான்.
    By wasting his substance on concubines he has become spare as a monkey, and by giving to common women he has become as dry as a stick.
  15. கூத்திப் பிள்ளைக்குத் தகப்பன் ஆர்?
    Who is the legal father of the child of a concubine?
  16. கூத்தியார் ஆத்தாள் செத்தால் கொட்டும் முழக்கும் கூத்தியார் செத்தால் ஒன்றும் இல்லை.
    When the mother of one's concubine dies, there will be beating of drums, but when the concubine dies, there will be no such display.
  17. கூத்தியார் செத்தால் பிணம், அவள் தாய் செத்தால் மணம்.
    When a concubine dies she is a mere corpse, whereas if her mother dies, her remains are honoured.
    By honouring the remains of her mother it is supposed that a man secures greater respect from his concubine.

    He frequents his concubine's house as a dog wandering about.
  19. கூத்துப் பார்க்கப் போன இடத்தில் பேய் பிடித்ததுபோல.
    As one was seized by a demon when he went to see a comedy.
  20. கூரிய சொல்லான் ஆரிலும் வல்லன்.
    He whose words are keen, is of all the most powerful.
  21. கூருக்கு எதிர் உதைத்தல் சூரெழ வருத்தும்.
    Kicking against thorns will cause pain.
  22. கூரை ஏறிக் கோழி பிடிக்கமாட்டாத குருக்கள் வானம் கீறி வைகுண்டம் காட்டுவாரா?
    If a guru is not able to go to the house-top to catch a fowl, how can he rend the heavens and show vikundam to his disciple?
  23. கூரைமேலே சோறு போட்டால் ஆயிரம் காகம் வரும்.
    If rice is thrown on the roof, a thousand crows will come.
  24. கூர்மையாளனே நேர்மையாளன்.
    The acute man is the upright man.
  25. கூலி குறைத்தால் வேலை கெடும்.
    If the hire be diminished, the work will be spoiled.
  26. கூலி குறைத்தாயே குறை மரக்கால் இட்டாயே.
    Thou hast reduced my wages, and used false measures when paying me.
  27. கூலிக்காரன் பெண்டாட்டி பிள்ளை பெறப்போகிறாளாம் குப்பையிலே ஆமணக்கு முளைக்கப் போகிறதாம்.
    It is said that the wife of a labourer is about to be confined, and that a castor plant will spring upon the midden.
  28. கூலிக்கு நாற்று நட வந்தவனுக்கு எல்லைக்கு வழக்கோ?
    Does he who came on hire to transplant grain institute a boundary suit?

    Will mere hirelings conquer?
  32. கூழ் ஆனாலும் குப்பை ஆனாலும் குடித்துக்கொண்டவன் பிழைப்பான்.
    Whether gruel or refuse, he who has drunk it will live.
  33. கூழுக்கு மாங்காய் தோற்குமா?
    Will an unripe mango fail before gruel?
  34. கூழுக்கு மாங்காய் கொண்டாட்டம் குரங்குக்குக் தேங்காய் கொண்டாட்டம்.
    An unripe mango improves the gruel, the kernel of a coconut is a feast to a monkey.
  35. கூழுக்கும் ஆசை மீசைக்கும் ஆசை.
    He wishes to drink the gruel, and he also wants a nice mustache.
    Spoken of things incompatible.
  36. கூழுக்குக் கொறடா மிளகாய்.
    A chilly serves as a whip to gruel.
    It makes it pungent.
  37. கூழ் என்றாலும் வாழ்வுக்குத் தக்கதாக குடிக்கத்தான் வேண்டும்.
    Though only gruel, it must be drunk agreeably to one's circumstances.
  38. கூழ் என்றாலும் குடித்தவன் பிழைப்பான்.
    If only gruel, he who drinks it will live.
  39. கூழ் குடிக்கிலும் கூட்டு ஆகாது.
    Fellowship is undesirable even in drinking gruel.

    Is it proper to say thoughtlessly that the gruel was sour, and then again that it was the mango that was sour?
  41. கூனனைக் கொண்டு குழப்படி மாமி காணிக்குப் பிள்ளை பெற.
    O, mother-in-law, imcite a quarrel through the hunchbacked that an heir may be born.
  42. கூனன் குறை தீர்ந்தான் கொடியோன் வினை பெயர்ந்தான்.
    The hunchbacked is relieved, the cruel man has escaped.
  43. கூனி ஆனாலும் கூடை சுமந்துதான் கூலி பெற வேண்டும்.
    Although her back is crooked, she will have to carry the basket before she gets her hire.
  44. கூனி வாயாற் கெட்டாற்போல.
    As she (Kaikesi) was demoralized by listening to the words of Kuni.
