ja, The twenty-third letter, and eighth consonant, in the Telugu alphabet.

జంకు dzanku, s. Fear, terror, apprehension, v. n. To fear, to be afraid.

జంకించు dzankintsu, v. a. To frighten.

జంఖానా dzankhana, s. A carpet.

జంగ dzanga, s. vide అంగ anga. జంగమము jangamamu, adj. Locomotive, moveable, s. Any thing which has motion, as opposed to that which is stationary.

జంగము dzangamu, s. A caste among the Suctras, who worship Siva exclusively ; some of them follow the profession of tailors.

జంగుపిల్లి dzangapilli, s. A wild cat of a large species.

జంజాటము dzandzatamu , s. The trouble, or annoyance, arising from a large family.

జంజాళి dzandzali, s. A dagger, with a handle covered, for defence.

జంట dzanta, s. A pair, or couple. జంటమోములదంట dzantamomuladanta, The god of fire, who has two faces. జంటరాశి dzantarasi, The sign Gemini.

జంతికెలు dzantikeln, s. plu. Cakes made of baked flour, in the form of a thin rope. జంతికె dzantike,The vessel upon which these cakes are made.

జంతువు jantuvu, s. An animal, or living creature ; any being endowed with animal life ; it is more usually applied, however, to those of the lowest organization. *

జంత్రము dzantramu, s. A machine. జంత్రపుబొమ్మ dzantrapubomma, A puppet.

జందెము dzandemu, s The sacerdotal thread.

జంపు dzampu, 5. Indolence, laziness. 2. Procrastination. 3. Length. 4. An ornament worn by Hindoos, from the tip of. the ear. adj. Long. జంపునడపు dzampunadapu, v. a, To procrastinate.

జంబు dzambu, s. A reed.

జంబుకము jambukamn, s. A jackal. •

జంభము jambhamu, s.' Grandeur, pomp, pride? presumption. The meaning of this word, in Telugu, is quite different from what it has in Sanskrit.

జకేరా dzakera, s. A store, or hoard.

జక్కవ dzakkava, s. The ruddy goose. జక్కవకవవిప్పు dzakka vaka vavippu, The moon ; because this bird is said never to couple during moon- light. జక్కవలమేలు dzakkavalamelu, The sun ; as favorable to this bird.

జక్కి dzakki, s. A horse.

జక్కించు dzakkintsu, v. a. To be in error, or in fault.

జక్కిని dzakkini, s. A married female, who dies during -her husband's life-time.

జక్కులు dzakkulu, *. plu. I)emi-gods ; or nymphs, attendant on On జక్కులవాండ్లు dzakkulavandlu, s. phc. People who worship the goddess of Kameswari

జగజంబు dzagadzambu, s. Excess ; a great deal.

జగడము dzagadamu, s. War, battle, combat. 2. A quarrel, or dispute. జగడమాడు dzagadamadu, v. n. To fight, quarrel, or dispute,

జగతి dzagati, s. A raised open veranda.

జగత్తు, జగము jagattu, jagamu, s. The world, the universe, 2. People, mankind.

జగివెడు dzagrvedu, *. The relationship of the husband of one sister, to that of another.

జగ్గుమను dzaggumanu, v. n. To be agreeable, or acceptable.

జజ్జు dzadzdzu, s. A rag, or tatter ; any thing torn. 2. Laziness^ adj. Lazy.

జట jata, s. The hair matted, as worn by Siva, or by the Hindoo ascetics. 2. The fibrous root, growing down from the branches of certain trees, in India. జటిలము dzatilamu, adj. Having matted hair.

జట్టి dzatti, s. Handsel, earnest money. 2. A bargain, or agreement.

జట్టు dzattu, s. An assemblage, or body of people.

జడ jada, 5. Plaited or braided hair. 2. Matted hair.

జడను jadanu, s. Stupidity, apathy. 2. Awkwardness.

జడము jadamu, adj. Cold, frigid, chilly. 2. Stupid, apathetic, idiotic 3. Inanimate.

జడి dzadi, s. Rain. జడివాన dzadivana, Heavy rain.

జడియు dzadiyu, v. n. To fear, or be afraid. జడిపించు dzadipintsu, To frighten, threaten, or alarm.

జడుపు dzadupu, s. Fear, fright.

జడ్డ dzadda, s. One consonant written below another •, as when the consonant is doubled, or when two consonants come together, with- out the intervention of a vowel.

జడ్డిగము dzaddigamu,s. A sowing machine.

జత dzata, s. A pair. 2. A set. 3. Equality of shape, adj. Equal.

జతనము dzatanamu, s. Endeavour. 2. Stratagem, expedient. 3. Effort, exertion. 4. Perseverance, energy.

జననము jananamu, s. Birth, production. 2. Famity, race, lineage.

జనము janamtt, s. Man, individually, or collectively; a man ; mankind; an individual, a person ; people, population, community.

జనుడు janudu, 5. A man. జనుము dzanumu, s. The hemp plant, Cannabis sativa.

జన్నము dzannamu, s. A sacrifice, or ceremony, in which oblations are presented.

జన్నిదము, జన్ని dzannidamu, dzanni, s. The sacerdotal thread.

జన్నియ, జన్నె dzanniya, dzanne, adj. Consecrated, or devoted, to the deity.

జన్మము janmamu, s. Birth, production.

జపము japamu, 5. Repeating inaudib]y passages from the Yedas, charms, or the names' of the deity ; counting silently the beads of a rosary, &c.

జపించు, జపియించు japintsu, japiyintsu, v. a. To repeat inaudibly prayers, &c. as above.

జప్తీ dzapti, s. Sequestration.

జబ్బ dzabba, s. The outer side of the thigh. 2. The arm.

జబ్బు dzabbu, s. Inattention, negligence, carelessness, 2- Delay, adj. Inattentive, negligent, 2. Slow. 3. Insipid.

జమ dzama, s. A revenue term, signifying collection, or assessment. జమచేయు dzamacheyu, To collect. జమాఖర్చు dzamakhartsu, An account of receipts, and disbursements. జమావసూలుబాకీ dzarnavasulubaki, Demand or assessment, collection, and balance. జమాబందీ dzamabandi,The settlement of the assessment.

జమిలి dzamili, ac£/. Double. జమిలిముక్కాలి dzamilimukkali, A bee, which has six feet.

జమిలిక dzamilika, s. A kind of tabor.

జమీను dzaminu, s- The land, ground, earth, or soil. జమీందారుడు dza- mindarudu, A zamindar.

జముడు jamuda, s. Yama, the regent of the world below, and the judge of departed souls. జమునెక్కిరింత jamunekkirinta, A buffalo ; because it is the steed of Yama.

జమున jamuna, s. The. river Jumna, which joins the Ganges below Al- lahabad. జమునయ్య jamunayya, The sun ; in mythology, the father of the Jumna.

జములు dzamulu, s. A couple.

జమ్ము dzammu, s. vide జంబు clzambu.

జయము jayamu, &•. Conquest, victory, triumph, success. జయించు jayintsu, To conquer, or win ; to be successful. 1

జరీ dzari, s. Gold or silver thread, or lace.

జరీబు dzaribu, s. The mensuration of land. జరుగు dzarugu, v. n. To pass, elapse, or expire. 2. To get, or move, on ; to creep. 3. To slip, or slide. 4. To flee.

జరుపు dzarupu, v. a. To spend, as time ; to procrastinate. 2. To pass time. 3. To move, or push, forward.

జరూరు dzaruru, adj. Necessary, requisite, urgent. s. Necessity, occasion, urgency.

జఱజఱ dzarradzarra, s- The noise arising from dragging along the ground.

జఱ్ఱున dzarrruna, adv. Quickly.

జలకడుగు dzalaka&ngu, v. To wash earth for gold, diamonds, &c. జలకడుగులవాండ్లు dzalakadugulavandlU, 5. p/u. A caste of people who search for articles, in drains, &c.

జలకము dzalakamu,5. Ablution, bathing.

జలతారు dzalataru, s. vide జరీ dzari.

జలదారి dzaladari, s. A drain, a kennel.

జలము jalamu, s. Water. జలబాధ jalabadha, Inclination to make urine. జలచరములు jalacharamulu, Aquatic animals,

జలుబు dzalubtt, s. A cold. #$. Cold. జలుబుచేయు dzalubucheyu,. To take or catch cold.

జల్ల dzalla, 5. A long narrow basket, placed 'on a cart, to contain any thing loose, which is carried on it.

జల్లను, జల్లుమను dzallanti, dzallumanu, v. n. To tremble, perspire, ©r have one's hair stand on end, from any involuntary affection of the passions.

జల్లి dzalli, s. Broken tiles, little stones. 2. Boasting lies, idle talk.

జల్లించు dzallintsu, v. a. To sift.

జల్లు dzalla, s. A shower. వర్షపుజల్లు varshapuclzallu, A shower of rain.

జల్లేడ dzalleda, s. A sieve.

జవ dzava, s. A frame, or setting. జవకట్టు dzavakattu, To set or frame. జవదాటు dzavadatu, To transgress prescribed limits.

జవట, జవర dzavata, dzavara, s. A net- like substance, which surrounds the palmyra tree, at those parts whence the branches expand.

జవరన dzavarana, s. Straightness, smoothness. జవరము dzavramu, adj. Straight, smooth.

జవరాలు, జవ్వని dzavaralu, dzavvani,s. A young female.

జవాది dzavadi, s. Civet. జవాదిపిల్లి dzavaclipilli, The civet cat.

జవాను javanu, s. A peon. జవాబు dzavabu, 5. An answer. జవాబుదారుడు clzavabudarudu, A surety; a person responsible. జవాబుస్వాలు dzavabuswalu,Discourse, argument. జవాబునివీసు dzavabunivisu, A writer of orders, or replies.

జవుకు dzavuku, v. n. To become soft, or ripe, as a boil. adj. Swampy, brakish.

జవురు dzavuru, v. a. To lash. 2. To collect any thing scattered.

జవ్వనము dzavvanamu, s. Youth.

జవ్వు dzavvu, s. Beauty, adj. Beautiful
