Usage

{{author
 | firstname =
 | lastname =
 | last_initial =
 | description =
}}

This template is meant to be used on author pages. Fill in any relevant information, and leave unknown or inapplicable parameters empty. Please don't remove or reorder parameters, as this makes reuse and automated maintenance more difficult. Any override parameters (see below) should be added at the bottom.

To also note that this template automatically applies some categorisation based on the years of life of the author (see Module:Author for more information), and a default sort based on the lastname field of the author.

Parameters

(The usage example below may help understand these.)

  • Normal parameters
    • firstname, lastname: The first and family name of the author.

If the name order comes from a tradition where the family name typically precedes the given name, please enter the name as follows, including the admonitory comment text:

      |firstname = Ming
      |lastname = Xing
      |invert_names = yes

    • last_initial: The initial two letters of the family name.
    • description: A brief description of author's works, and personal history; usable for specific notes.
  • Internal links (optional - use whichever are appropriate)
    • portal: slash-separated list of related portals. e.g., World History/Greece
    • related_author: slash-separated list of related authors. e.g. William Shakespeare/Francis Bacon
  • Interwiki links (optional - use whichever are appropriate)
    • wiktionary, wikiversity, wikispecies, meta, wikilivres
  • Overrides (for exceptions)
    • image: (link data provided from Wikidata, by default) The name of the image on Wikisource or Wikicommons, excluding the 'image:' or 'file:' prefixes (Filename.ext).
    • defaultsort: Override the category sorting, which is normally "lastname, firstname".
    • dates: Override the displayed birth and death dates. Don't include the parentheses.
    • image_caption: Override the default firstname lastname.
    • upright: upright = yes to the image configuration applies a 0.6 scaling factor for long images.
    • wikidata: Use a specified Wikidata ID (i.e. Qnnnnnn) instead of that of the page that the template is used on.
    • disambiguation: Used only when this template is transcluded from {{disambiguation}} (when it's set to 'yes').

Notes:

  1. With the exception of description, none of the parameters should be wikilinked (wrapped in [[ ]]) as the requisite fields are appropriately designed to do such linking. Links can be used within the descriptive text by traditional or wikilink methodologies.
  2. Links are being migrated to Wikidata as they are created at that site. Parameters are retained for cases where the Wikidata data needs to be overwritten.

Usage example

{{author
 | firstname = Booker Taliaferro
 | lastname = Washington
 | last_initial = Wa
 | description = (Description here.)
}}
Booker Taliaferro Washington
(1856–1915)
Political leader, educator and author.
Booker Taliaferro Washington

Microformat

The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the person's details parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia or via a browser tool operated by a reader, to (for example) add the subject to an address book or database. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikimedia projects, please see Wikipedia's microformat project.

Sub-templates

Date-of-birth ("bday") information will only be included in the microformat if {{Birth date}}, {{Birth date and age}}, {{Birth-date}} ({{bday}}), or {{Birth-date and age}} ({{b-da}}) are used in the infobox. (but do not use these if the date is before 1583).

To include a URL, use {{URL}}.

Please do not remove instances of these sub-templates.
