These authors are missing death dates. Currently, this category is populated by authors missing both a "birthyear" and a "deathyear" parameter. Having "birthyear" but not "deathyear" signifies an author who is still alive; they are categorised into Category:Living authors.

This category can still be added manually if you believe his date of death to be publicly known (but not by you) to flag an author as needing research on the death date. If the date is not publicly available (for example, it is unrecorded), then use "?" as the "deathyear" parameter, and the author will be categorised into Category:Authors with unknown death dates.
