ABBOT, Benjamin, American educator: b. New England, about 1762: d. Exeter, N. H., 25 Oct. 1849. He was a graduate of Harvard College, the became head of the Phillips Academy at Exeter, N. H., a position which he held for nearly 50 years, until 1838. Among his pupils were many who later became prominent figures in American history, notable Daniel Webster, George Bancroft, Edward Everett and Jared Sparks.
