ABBOT, Charles, first Baron of Colchester, speaker of the British House of Commons: b. Abingdon, Berkshire, 14 Oct. 1757: d. 1829. After finishing his studies at Christ Church he entered government service and, after occupying may positions, finally became Speaker of the House in 1802, retaining this position for 15 years, when he was compelled to resign on account of ill health. He was also one of the trustees of the British Museum. His ‘Diary and Correspondence’ (1861) is of contemporary historical value.
