This biography of the English writer Thomas Hardy was written while its subject was still alive, and includes information gleaned from first-hand interviews with him. It also covers Hardy's ancestry, outside influences, and, in distinct chapters, his pre-writing life, his prose, his poetry, and his work on the closet-drama epic The Dynasts, which Brennecke considers Hardy's masterpiece. This book is a reflection of its time while also a seminal (if occasionally hagiographic) biography of one of the greatest late-Victorian English writers.
