SAN JOSÉ DE CÚCUTA, kōō′kōō-tȧ, or simply Cúcuta. A town in the Department of Santander, Colombia, situated on the Tachira, near the Venezuelan frontier (Map: Colombia, C 2). Since the earthquake which destroyed the town in 1875 it has been reconstructed with broad clean streets and a large square. It is a centre of trade between Santander and Venezuela, and is the terminus of a railroad to Puerto Villamizar. Population, 13,000.
