The New International Encyclopædia/Staten Island

STATEN (stăt′en) ISLAND. An island of New York constituting Richmond County, and since 1898 the Borough of Richmond, New York City (q.v.). It is distant a little more than five miles from the southern extremity of Manhattan Island, and is separated from Long Island on the east by the Narrows, which connect the Upper New York Bay with the Lower Bay.
