The Phantom 'Rickshaw and Other Tales  (1890)
by Rudyard Kipling

This transcription is of the first edition to be printed in England. Two earlier editions (1888 and 1889), containing the same four stories, were printed in Allahabad, India. The 1890 edition includes a facsimile of the cover from the 1888 edition. Apart from The Man Who Would Be King, the stories had previously appeared elsewhere. Details, derived from Bibliography of the Works of Rudyard Kipling (1927), by Flora V. Livingston, are included in the Notes for each one.

PREFACE.

This is not exactly a book of real ghost-stories, as the cover makes believe, but rather a collection of facts that never quite explained themselves. All that the collector can be certain of is that one man insisted upon dying because he believed himself to be haunted; another man either made up a wonderful fiction, or visited a very strange place; while the third man was indubitably crucified by some person or persons unknown, and gave an extraordinary account of himself.

Ghost-stories are very seldom told at first-hand. I have managed, with infinite trouble, to secure one exception to this rule. It is not a very good specimen, but you can credit it from beginning to end. The other three stories you must take on trust; as I did.
