In the name of life.


"What has your Father done to you, O soul,
on the great day when you were established?"
He led me down into the Jordan and planted me there,
then he led me up to its bank and set me down.
He prepared Pihtā and handed it to me,
spoke the praise over the cup and gave me to drink.
He placed me between his knees
And spoke the name of the mighty (life) over me.
He shook the mountain and...,
he cried out with a full voice and made me hear.
He cried out and made me hear with a full voice:
"If there is strength in you, soul, come".
"If I climb the mountain,
I fall and disappear from the world again".
I raised my eyes to the height,
with my soul I hoped for the home of life.
I climbed the mountain and did not fall,
but reached there and found my own life.


"What did your Father do to you, O soul,

"If I go into the sea, I will drown
and disappear again from the world".
I raised my eyes to the height,
with my soul I hoped for the home of life.
I went into the sea and did not drown,
but got there and found my own life.


O Life, O, life, life triumphed over this world,
life is victorious.

Commentary[edit]

(a) This is the hymn of baptism. Recite the hymns correctly. In the place that it says "souls," read as it is written. If the soul is one, say "between the Mānās of light, the soul of N, son of N, who went down to the Jordan, was baptized in the Jordan and took the pure sign". Recite "What has your father done to you, O soul".


(b) Recite the hymn about the Jordan " How beautiful are the plants" (= LXXXIII)


(c) "Rightly baptized me my Baptist" (= LXXXIV), "šilmai baptized us with baptism" (= LXXXV), "The Jordan in which ... were baptized" (LXXXVI), "I rejoice my disciples" (LXXXVII).


(d) Recite also other hymns: "Urgently I exhort you" (LXXXVIII), "To you I call zmd I declare, men who have received the sign" 1 (LXXXIX), "A disciple am I, a new one, who went to the bank of the Jordan" (= XC).


(e) Then read "Blessed and praised be the life" of Šum bar Nū (= LXX). In the place it says "A wreath from the vine, [... illegible] on the head of these souls [... illegible] and baptized Jordan, who have been called forth, strengthened and marked by this baptism, as well as those of our fathers, teachers, brothers and sisters who have departed from their bodies and who are still in their bodies." If the soul you baptize is One, say "the soul of the NN who went down to the Jordan and was baptized" to the end. Read "Good is good for the good" (= LXXII) until the end. Make a request and pray. About souls you baptize, say "to these souls who went down to the Jordan, were baptized, and received the pure mark". If the soul is one, say "to the soul of the NN who went down to the Jordan, was baptized and received the pure mark". Be careful from beginning to end to recite (the prayers for) the whole baptism carefully, thoughtfully and knowledgeably. Give them Kustā for the second time.


(f) say:
"Kuštā heal you. You Uthras, my brothers, establish the connection with life as the Uthras establish it in their škinās. You Uthras, my brothers, pleasant is your [...], and your inside is all full of splendor". You shall then say "Seek and find, speak and be heard" and kiss their hand.
If the souls you baptize are women, even if the soul is One, hand them Kuštā and say to them, "Kuštā heal you and strengthen you. Let your Kuštā be your witness and your alms be your companion." They should then say, "Seek and find, speak and iverde heard," and kiss their hand.


Then say to them: (g) "Your Kuštā be your witness and your alms be your guide, your prayer and your praise bring you grace. In the name of the great life. We carried out the goodness of the great (life) and put your intestine heart in order from beginning to end. We created the great Jordan of living water and the 360 Jordan in which Hibil-Zīwā baptized in the Jordan. This one said: "Warn, redeem, save, and guard these souls who went down to the Jordan, were baptized, and accepted the pure mark, from adultery: theft, evil sorcery, from going to the idol temples, worshipping the idol temples, and eating of the idol temples. Of that which a lion, wolf kills, and of the sick and diseased end, but baptize and purify yourselves, so that Mandā d-Haijē may be a helper to you and your tariffs may be fully valid."


(h) Then make supplication and prayer for yourself and say:


(i) "In the name of life. I adore the first life, praise my Lord Mandā d-Haijē and that great face of honor which has exuded from itself". Then read: "Praise be to the first life" (= LVIII), "Kuštā heal you", "You have been straightened and strengthened" (= LXV), turn your olive staff towards your right and finish saying it. Then turn it to your left and read "Blessed and praised be the life" of šum bar Nū (= LXXI). Sit down and read "Good is the good for the good" (= LXXI, kneel down and pour out at "a remission of sins" - our ancestors and the souls of the Mandaeans, priests, bishops, treasurers, chiefs, patriarchs and heads of the age - a remission of sins. Then stand on your feet, carry Pihtā and Mambūhā, there, read the 8 prayers of the Pihtā over the Pihtā and the two prayers of the Mambūhā over the Mambūhā, baptize your Pihtā with the Mambūhā, read "Life spoke and created" (= LV) over your Pandāmā, put this aside, eat your Pihtā, drink your Mambūhā, drink a "rinse", carry a [...] rinse and read "The Life became full" (= LIX) and "Life rests among its friends" (= LX). Throw your incense at "the splendor rises to its place" (= XXXI). At the place zvo it says "he ... forgive the friends of the name of the Kuštā" [say] "and those souls who went down to the Jordan, were baptized zind accepted the pure sign. Then pour under your olive staff, read "Good is the good for the good", make supplication and prayer for yourself, hand Kuštā to the Sgandā, and U'ight he descends, read "With rich splendor I am baptized" (=LXIII), put aside your Pandāmā and honor your crown.
