The Sabbath Light Takes Precedence Over the Hanukkah Light

נר של שבת קודם לנר של חנוכה

Paragraph 1 — One who cannot afford to purchase a Hanukkah light and a Sabbath light should purchase a Sabbath light for the sake of the well-being of his home. (And see above Section 263 Paragraph 3.) And if he has enough for the Sabbath [light] but does not have enough for [both] a Hanukkah light and wine for the daytime kiddush, he should purchase the Hanukkah light for the sake of publicizing of the miracle. Rem"a: It is similarly the case that the Hanukkah light takes precedence over the havdalah wine, and see above Section 296 Paragraph 5.

סעיף א — מי שאין ידו משגת לקנות נר חנוכה ונר שבת יקנה נר שבת מפני שלום ביתו. (וע"ל סימן רס"ג סעיף ג') ואם יש לו לשל שבת ואין לו לנר חנוכה וליין לקידוש, היום יקנה לנר חנוכה משום פרסומי ניסא. הגה: והוא הדין נר חנוכה קודם ליין הבדלה, ועיין לעיל סימן רצ"ו סעיף ה.
