Translation:Shulchan Aruch/Yoreh Deah/150
Keeping distant from the ways of idolatry and not bowing before them.
Contains 3 Seif.
1[edit]It's a mitzvah to keep 4 amot distance [approx. 6 ft.] from a way of idolatry. 2[edit]If a thorn stuck in his foot when he was in front of an idol or his money scattered in front of it: he should not remove the thorn or pick up his money, since it looks like he's bowing to it. Rather he should sit or turn his back or side to the idol and then pick it up. 3[edit]Fountain figures that spray water before idols, he should not put his mouth to their faucets and drink since it looks like he's kissing the idols.
Officials or priests who have the likeness of idolatry on their clothes or who carry the likeness of the sun before them as the gemmonim (הגמונים) do: It's forbidden to bow to them or remove one's hat before them. Only in a way that doesn't make it seem [like bowing to them], like his coins scattered or standing up before they come near. Similarly he should remove his hat before they come (T"H #196). But some are lenient with this since it's known the idolaters also are only removing their hat or bowing to the official and not the sun image (ibid. in the name of R"Y of Apnom and MHRY"V). It's good to be stringent like the first opinion. |
