1. The Brut y Tywysogion (Chronicle of the Princes) records this in 838 as the "Battle of Cyfeilog" between Wales and "King Berthwryd" (r. 839–852) of Mercia and makes clear that Merfyn died in the action. Sources describing the Welsh as rebelling against the rule of Beorhtwulf's son in 853 imply they were subjugated.
2. The Brut records this as 850 and adds that it was by his own men.
