Baker, James, active 1733 * Alternative Names: referred to in the British Library archives index as "Baker, James, of Add MS 32688" but this is not an alternate name properly speaking because "of Add MS 32688" is just an internal code-designation * SNAC: 84378621 * Wikidata: none * VIAF: none * Exist Dates: active 1733 * Biography: Unidentified person. Wrote a letter to the Duke of Newcastle in 1733. It's possible that this is James Baker 1693-1768 (Wikidata Q97771846); he was appointed Vicar of Stamfordham in 1832, and I believe that Stamfordham was part of the Duke of Newcastle's area of influence -- Baker could have wanted to write to the Duke soon after taking up his post with thanks, updates, or whatever. Further info: Baker was a fellow of Peterhouse (Cambridge) from 1716 to 1733, and ultimately earned both M.D. and D.D. degrees. He was Vicar of Stamfordham from 1832 to 1861, at which point he inherited family lands (Grove Hall in Wakefield among others) and resigned to look after them. * Archival Resources: i. http://searcharchives.bl.uk/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?srt=rank&ct=search&mode=Basic&indx=1&vl(freeText0)=040-002026755&fn=search&vid=IAMS_VU2 "Vol. iii. Son of Judah Baker, who set up in the ship chandlery business in 1844. In the 1850s, Judah took his son into the business. James married Harriet Maria Humphrey of Brookline in 1859, and moved from Boston to Brookline where he resided for the rest of his life. Soon after, Judah, James, and Harriet's brother Willard J. Humphrey formed a partnership as the firm "Bakers & Humphrey," offices at 99 Commercial Street, Boston; they retained that name until first Judah (in 1879) then Willard Humphrey (in 1887) died. James then began trading as just "James Baker," taking his son James E. Baker (see IA.39) as a junior member of the firm in 1888. He died in 1898, leaving the business to James E., who ran it until retiring and closing down in 1908. At any rate it's clear that the grandfather is not James Baker 1713-1776 of Dorchester, Mass. Here's a summary of what that questionably-reliable source says: Rev. James H. Baker was born in Clark County, Kentucky in 1835. He was a merchant, farmer, and stockraiser in Ruckerville, KY, also Postmaster of the town for two decades. In 1859 [sic: 1858], he married Sally Ann Rucker, daughter of Reuben Rucker [the keeper of the ledger in the archival resource here]. Became a minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as of 1861. Attended the Bible College of Kentucky University [now Lexington Theological Seminary] from 1866 to 1868, after which he was hired by the Kentucky Missionary Board. He worked as a missionary in many parts of Kentucky, his salary being at one time $1,200 a year, before again settling down on his Ruckerville farm. After finishing her education, she taught school until at eighteen she married James Artemas Baker, the postmaster of Ohio, Texas, with whom she grew cotton. Poor cotton-growing conditions led J. A. to switch to freight and trading for his primary business. "During the year 1894 ... J. A. and Alice [Baker] ... took over the operation of a small combination mercantile store and post office, and acquired a quarter-section of land on which they established the present town of Lockney. Farming took second place to Baker as he assumed the multiple duties of creating and promoting the town along with expanding his freighting business.... Alice ran the store and post office, ordered supplies, kept the home, and raised the children.... Through the years in which she operated the store, Mrs. Baker gained the reputation of a capable business woman. However, and more importantly, her empathy for the clientele which her store served earned her the reputation of a wise and caring person.... In the early 1900s ... Mrs. Baker began making semiannual trips to wholesale dry goods markets...." Alice Baker designed the family's imposing wooden house in Lockney which was completed in 1909. J. A. died unexpectedly in 1917. Two years later Alice married C. W. Smith, which was a cause of unhappiness to her children. "By the time of James Baker's death, two of his sons, Robin and Artemus or 'Artie,' had been brought into the store. The two sons assumed control of the store, and during the time of Alice Baker's marriage, filed a paper declaring Baker Mercantile Company to be a trust. By April of 1920 Alice Baker Smith had returned to her family, while C. W. remained on his farm. Eventually, Alice dropped the 'Smith' from her name and assumed control of the dry goods store.... As the debt problems which the store faced in the 1930s continued to mount, both Robin and Artie became involved in other businesses—Robin in butane and Artie in irrigation—and moved away from Lockney in the mid-1940s. Mrs. Alice Baker died at the age of ninety-nine, three months before her 100th birthday. She worked in the store until 1963 when she was ninety-six years of age." * Archival Resources: i. http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/25074175 "Burnett, Georgellen. A. Baker and the "Baker Brothers" (i.e. Artie and Robin). However, since Alice had the largest share in actually running the store, including purchasing for it, during the entire time period of the records, she surely must be mentioned in them. * Places: Lockney (Tex.); Floyd County (Tex.) * Subjects (from ii and iii): Frontier and pioneer life--Texas; General stores--Texas--History; Pioneers--Texas, West; Ranching--Texas, West; Lockney (Tex.)--Economic conditions--History; Depressions--1929--Texas, West 2. James Addison Baker, identity uncertain There are a few archival resources which clearly pertain to one or another of the four generations of James Addison Bakers of Houston but I wasn't able to determine which one. As follows: i. http://www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/utcah/01565/01565-P.html "Rockwell Brothers Records, 1883-1947" Although the U Texas finding aid identifies the James A. Baker in these records as James A. Baker 1930- (IA.25 / SNAC 16166952), it's not likely to be him, young as he was at the end of their timespan in 1947. [And I don't accept U Texas's opinion as authoritative because there's another case where they unquestionably made a misidentification, see IA.23.vii.] It could be either or both of James A. Baker 1857-1841 (IA.23 / SNAC 19533614) or James A. Baker 1892-1973 (IA.24). ii. http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/658213682 "Rockwell Brothers, records, 1883-1947" Ditto. iii. http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/261344525 "George R. Brown executive files, 1937-1978" The James Addison Baker named in these files seems most likely to be James A. Baker 1892-1973 (IA.24), an almost exact contemporary of George R. Brown. However, Brown's activity period did overlap somewhat with those of James A. Baker 1857-1941 (IA.23 / SNAC 19533614) and James A. Baker III 1930- (IA.25 / SNAC 16166952).
