"The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame."

-Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

The possession or publication of this text, or ones closely mirroring it, has been deemed to be illegal in some jurisdictions in the past. By publishing and hosting it, Wikisource editors are neither propagating nor condoning its message; it is offered here as a historical record of a piece by which researchers and interested parties may study the author, the period in which it was written, and the controversy which arose from its original publication.

Wikisource maintains an index of 'banned' books which have been barred from national publication in the past. In addition, we host works by Hitler and bin Laden alike, and a number of works banned under the Index Librorum Prohibitorum

"Dat veniam corvis, vexat censura columbas - Censure acquits the raven, but pursues the dove."

-Juvenal, Satire 2
Examples of legislation

"Censorship always defeats it own purpose, for it creates in the end the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion. "

-Henry Steele Commager, Freedom and Order

"We can never be sure that the opinion we are endeavoring to stifle is a false opinion; and if we were sure, stifling it would be an evil still."

-John Stuart Mill, On Liberty
