YOUNG MEN are DECEITFUL.

IN this town there lives a sweet lovely creature,
For wit and parentage none can exceed her,
She is now in her prime, gay, brisk, and airy,
And is, now at this time the flower of any.

When to her I did go, I said, Fair creature,
My heart is so enflam’d with your sweet features,
That I can take no rest, my dearest jewel,
For love torments my breast, pray be not cruel.

O fie! young man, she said, if I should love ye,
Your parents they’ll say, you are above me,
Then you’ll not me regard, but prove a rover,
And I shall find it hard for to recover.

Talk not of parentage, no nor relations,
My dear, I have for you such veneration,
Was I a Lord, Duke, or Earl, Cupid direct me,
In rich diamonds & pearls, my dear, I’d deck thee.

Was I a King myself, or rul’d the nation,
Or had I all the world in my possession,
And you as poor as Job, I’d ne’er forsake you,
But mistress of the globe I soon would make you.

Then hearing what he said, she stood amazed,
And nothing to him said, but on him gazed,
When she her silence broke, Cupid regarded her,
You’d thought an angel spoke, had you but heard her.

But since you've, young man, these words expressed,
No longer let your heart be so oppressed;
This heart that once was mine, to thee I deliver,
Take it in exchange for thine, keep it for ever.

Witness ye pow'rs above that first created us,
Nothing but death, my love, shall separate us,
There is nothing now to keep us asunder,
Then let's to church and be joined together.

But when he of her heart had thus bereav'd her,
He play'd the tyrant's part, and soon did leave her,
Which makes me for to cry, fatal man I find him,
Since he is gone, farewel, I ne'er will mind him.
