The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is an independent agency of the United States government charged with preserving and documenting government and historical records and with increasing public access to those documents, which comprise the National Archives.— Excerpted from National Archives and Records Administration on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Circular seal with the coat of arms of the United States in the centre: A bald eagle supporting a shield resembling the United States flag, with its wings outstretched, 13 arrows in its left talonand an olive branch in its right talon.  A scroll above the eagle reads "Littera Scripta Manet" (meaning "the written word lasts").  Around the inner edge of the seal are the words "National Archives and Records Administration" and, at the lowest point, the year 1985.
