@Billinghurst: Since I see that you are proactive in researching authors, may I ask for your assistance in finding the name of his wife? I wanted to put the appropriate wikilink at Page:A dictionary of the Hakka dialect.pdf/8. Fish bowl (talk) 00:51, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Fish bowl: Only secondary/circumstantial evidence, though I am reasonably comfortable that the wife is Elizabeth Murray (1850-1935). Definitely have the family in 1901 census in Scotland, with wife and children. The children give enough information to say that the family was in China in the 1880s, though whether they married prior to departure or in Orient is unknown. The children's data also shows maternal grandparents and the name Murray. The probate was "dative qua" which indicates that it is a family connection for executor, and the second dative qua to daughter pretty much indicates that the wife has deceased and the daughter is the next family member and the year corresponds with the death of Elizabeth Maciver in the right place and time of the right age. Topped off with her probate that ties daughter and brother. Marriage would have been nice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I couldn't find an obit for Donald in The Scotsman, didn't try to dig through other Scotch newspapers. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:02, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunate that women are so easily obscured in history :( Thank you for the research. Is it enough confidence to fill in the wikilink? Fish bowl (talk) 04:51, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
