Monsignor Donald R. Macdonald, D. P. (Domestic Prelate)

  • Born in Mogenais, Quebec, c. 1866 (note, Mogenais appears to be a typo, not sure what the actual place is)
  • Parents are hotelier Hugh R. Macdonald and Catherine Ann Macdonald
  • Grew up in Alexandria, Ontario, attended Ottawa College (now University of Ottawa)
  • Ordained to priesthood July 10 1892
  • Curate of St Finnan's Cathedral in Alexandria for several years
  • Appointed pastor in Crysler in 1898, moved to Glen Nevis in 1906
  • Granted "domestic prelate" title in 1923
  • Retired 1940 and was named resident priest at Precious Blood Monastery in Alexandria
  • Founded a missionary order for anglophone Canadian women, Our Lady's Missionaries, in 1949
  • Died Jan 11 1957 in hospital in Cornwall ON
  • Founded several churches and schools throughout his career
  • Also invented a secret ballot design, adopted by Canadian government in 1901, and by several provincial governments
