Family memoir, other background[edit]

For background, there is https://archive.org/details/familymemoirbein00will, a memoir mostly about the life of her father, Thomas Wilde Powell (1818-1897). Actually not much about Eleanor, but she is mentioned on p. 185, one month old, in April 1859.

There were nine children, the eldest being w:Christiana Herringham. There is a biography of Christiana, but I'm not finding anything about Eleanor in it.

For the rest of the family, see this page about Theodora Wilde Powell (1871-1920). Charles Matthews (talk) 05:04, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hah. This p. 220 of the Englishwoman's Year Book and Directory (1900) has an entry for the Southwark Women's University Settlement, Treasurer Miss E. G. Powell of Piccard's Rough, Guildford. "Piccard's Rough" being the family home built by Thomas Wilde Powell, that I say is conclusive identification.

@Billinghurst: The youngest of the children was Herbert Andrews Powell (born 1863, d:Q76282846). The family lived at Blackheath and Charlton, London, before moving to Guildford. Are there census results showing the children? Charles Matthews (talk) 08:21, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Charles Matthews: Below. I cannot see the family in the 1861 census. The mother Mary Elizabeth née Marten/Martin (b. c/1827), died March 1871 prior to that census, though didn't look for variations of spelling. Marriage for parents was 1852. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:38, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Additional records that I can see are electoral rolls. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:41, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. By the way, the father is the T. W. Powell mentioned in The Coming Colony/Chapter 6, playing a part in the history of Western Australia (final spike in the Great Southern Railway [1], brought traction engines for steam ploughing with him). Interesting fellow, given his support also for Arts and Crafts. I'm drafting a WP article for him. Charles Matthews (talk) 12:45, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Billinghurst: w:Thomas Wilde Powell now exists, and under family there is some biography for Eleanor Grace. Charles Matthews (talk) 17:18, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

University settlements[edit]

Eleanor co-wrote a book chapter in https://archive.org/details/universitysocial00reasrich/page/88/mode/2up with Margaret A. Sewell; Sewell wrote a book chapter in The Equipment of the Social Worker (1925) by w:Elizabeth Macadam.[2] Eleanor was secretary of the Women's University Settlement. It adds up to a background in social work.

There is a photo from 1888 of her in her time as a history tutor at Somerville College. Without photographer information, that is a bit marginal for Commons. Charles Matthews (talk) 05:31, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dictionary of Political Economy[edit]

Interesting: she is listed, as Eleanor G. Powell, as a contributor[3] in the Dictionary of Political Economy by Author:Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave. She wrote numerous articles for it.[4] Charles Matthews (talk) 05:46, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
