George?, if so appears to be stockbroker[edit]

@Charles Matthews: With Lionel (George) Robinson, you have identified with the George. If it is the George, then it is almost certainly the Australian stockbroker, as no one else evident. Where was the information about the art critic sourced? I can dig for an LR (without George) if you think that we are talking a different person. @Billinghurst: I think it is Lionel Robinson who was quite a well known Victorian art critic. There is a fair bit about him here. There he is said to write for the Illustrated London News, and to work as an official at Somerset House. He was a member of the Reform Club. He also wrote for the Art Journal, and a French paper, the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. He was a friend and patron of James Abbott McNeill Whistler. He is very likely the friend of Author:George Meredith who is mentioned in the DNB article for Meredith. All this is a good fit with the two biographies.
I believe I must have identified him with the Lionel G. Robinson who is 16852660 on VIAF. In any case, I have turned up this page on Whistler where a footnote calls him "Lionel George Robinson, writer and editor". Perhaps that is not so reliable, in that another page on that site, [1], footnotes Lionel Robinson as "Hercules Arthur Temple Robinson, 1866-1937" who became the 2nd Baron Rosmead. Maybe he was Lionel to friends. Well, seems you can't trust anyone these days.
In the circumstances, I'm not committed to the George. I do think the art critic is our guy. Charles Matthews (talk) 17:05, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, in 1867 the Audit Office had a Lionel George Robinson employed: that being the government department in which the art critic worked.[2]. Plus, Kelly's Post Office London Directory of 1891, Google Books shows me a snippet from p. 50, "Robinson, Lionel Geo. Exchequer Audit Dept., Directing Branch". @Charles Matthews: Thanks. Got him, a generation earlier. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:04, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
