Michael Terry, died 1903[edit]

Absent any information about this author, I propose to look into a Michael Terry who is in Alumni Oxonienses. He has a Crockford's entry from 1865 as vicar of w:Kelstern: [1]. He was there only 1864-66, according to what I can read in Thoroton Society Record Series, Volumes 15-16 (1953), identifiable with the Lincoln College, Oxford B.A. of 1839: "Deac. 1845, pr. 1846. Vic. Kelstern 1864-6. D. 11 March 1903, in London."

The thought is that a non-standard clerical career might fit with being in Italy in the early 1860s, and a return to a rather remote Lincolnshire parish. The patron at Kelstern is given as J. E. Denison, i.e. w:Evelyn Denison, 1st Viscount Ossington, at the time Speaker of the House of Commons. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:02, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

There are other Oxbridge clerical Michael Terrys: one (ACAD TRY794M) who died 1848 and may be the nephew of the one in Alumni Oxonienses who died 1798; one in Alumni Oxonienses who died 1861 as rector of Mildenhall. It seems quite likely that the curate of Sherborne in 1859 is this one (Dorset County Chronicle); and the one who gave a lecture on "Reasoning" to the Dover Philosophical Institution that year (Dover Express).

This Michael Terry moved on to w:Awsworth (Alumni Oxonienses, in 1869, and in 1866 per newspaper reports). He had at least three sons: Arthur Michael (born 1864), Hubert Lanphier (born 1865)[2], and Cyril (born 1870).[3] Newspaper reports give the first two sons born at w:Oving, Buckinghamshire. A marriage c.1863 is suggested. Charles Matthews (talk) 08:48, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

And if we believe [4], Michael Terry 1820-1903 did indeed marry in 1863, to Charlotte Sarah Hunter. At least circumstantially, the potential identification is on track. Charles Matthews (talk) 13:03, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

This states he attended King's College London. Charles Matthews (talk) 16:52, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

So here is Alumni Oxonienses: Alumni Oxonienses: the Members of the University of Oxford, 1715-1886/Terry, Michael (3), with a 23-year gap between the B.A. in 1841 and Kelstern. There is the Rev. M. Terry who carried out a Terry-Hunter marriage at the British Embassy in Brussels in 1851.[5] A newspaper report (Thursday 20 February 1851 Dorset County Chronicle) says it was Michael Terry. So one possibility is that he was abroad. (Could still be the Rev. Michael Terry who died 1861, but he was in his 70s by then.) Charles Matthews (talk) 06:27, 7 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

According to Kelly's Clergy List for 1851, on Hathi Trust (link), a Michael Terry who is presumably this one was curate at an Islington church, St Matthew City Road. The other Michael Terry MA was at Breane, where he had been since 1849; he moved to Mildenhall in 1855. OTOH the same work in 1859 (link) shows Michael Terry MA, but not this one. In 1866 Michael Terry at Kelsterne is there (link). Charles Matthews (talk) 06:40, 8 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Billinghurst: The Clergy List entries give the first concrete indication that this Michael Terry may be the sought-for author, because the most plausible explanation for the absence in 1859 is time spent abroad. The officiation of a Rev. Michael Terry at a Brussels Terry-Hunter wedding in 1851 is a clue. Can you throw light on the period from 1850 to 1863, when he married (we take it)? Can we say when Edward Terry of Botley, Hampshire, the father, died? Which may have made a marriage financially possible.

The data in the Clergy List can easily have been a year or so out of date when it was published. Can Michael Terry be placed in London in the 1851 census? Charles Matthews (talk) 07:13, 8 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Charles Matthews: I can only see 8 Michael Terry in 1861 census, and this looks the most obvious and reasonable case based on occupation alone, let alone adding age. No others had a career that would indicate submitting articles to a literary magazine. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:14, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Re Edward Terry, there is no likely death post 1863 when they start adding age to deaths. in 1841 census I cannot see a couple of Edward and Jane. Michael at age 20 is living with his brother, so not much to confirm anything. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:19, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Billinghurst: Many thanks for digging out the data below. While the 1851 wedding in Brussels now looks like his brother's, I find it reasonably convincing that this Rev. Michael Terry could have been in Italy on what was effectively missionary work, in the early 1860s. The timing is historically apt ([6], this book may have more once I can get to a library), and the w:Foreign Aid Society was an organisation active in such things at this period. What is more, Terry being given a living after such time abroad makes sense as preferment: the Speaker Denison had at least enough religious interest to commission a Bible commentary.

No smoking gun. There might be specialised records somewhere. @Levana Taylor: What do you make of this? I haven't gone through the articles looking for internal evidence. There seems a plausible narrative and background supporting the claim. Charles Matthews (talk) 15:03, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

St Matthew's, City Road, Islington[edit]

This was a Gilbert Scott church opened in 1848, and the evidence is that its tradition was high church/Tractarian. The first incumbent was Robert Henry Howard, apparently not an Oxbridge graduate. He was followed by John Lawrell, died 1865 after 12 years there, who must be most relevant to Terry: as John Laurell he is in Alumni Oxonienses: Alumni Oxonienses: the Members of the University of Oxford, 1715-1886/Laurell, John, a Merton College graduate in 1838. He had the Dorset living of Hampreston before moving to Islington. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:16, 10 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Looks like that could be Richard Henry Howard, despite what is said here, though: Alumni Oxonienses: the Members of the University of Oxford, 1715-1886/Howard, Richard Henry: moving up north in 1853. He comes under "Howard of Wygfair" (or Wigfair). Charles Matthews (talk) 08:00, 10 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Before Hampreston, Lawrell was at w:Dummer, Hampshire, 1839-41, according to [7] p. 16. At this point the plot may thicken, because Dummer was the family home of the Terry family, including two of the clerical Michael Terrys mentioned above. One of those is well known because of an involvement in Jane Austen's family: Irene Collins, Jane Austen and the Clergy, p.59. I'm going to take this as a broad hint that the Terrys of Dummer are related to the other Hampshire Terrys of Botley. Charles Matthews (talk) 07:25, 10 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Lawrell wrote in 1858 about the first ten years of St Matthew's [8], curates not getting a mention. There is a clear indication of ritualist sympathies; and preachers connected to Australia and New Zealand. Charles Matthews (talk) 05:46, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
