Slovak Lutheran pastor Samo Tomášik originally called the song Hej, Slováci (Hey, Slovaks), referring only to his own nation, but later changed it to include all Slavs. This rewritten version became popular among other Slavic peoples too. Its Serbo-Croatian translation Hey, Slaveni became the national anthem of Yugoslavia.
