SVATOPLUK ČECH
(1846–1908)

As when a dew-drop glitters
Upon a bud at dawn,
As when a single jewel
Upon a ring is borne,
As when the sky the starlight,
A cave a crystal holds,
So too my heart your portrait
For ever more enfolds.

The hills will change to valleys,
The ocean will run dry,
The sun will shine no longer,
The gleaming moonlight die;
The heart will cease its beating
Within my living breast,
Before my love that blazes
For you will sink to rest.
