חנון II c. חנון (יחנון) Henna, Alcanet. n plnt of the leaves of which a paste is made for dyeing nails, hair &c. Sabb. 54b (ref. to חנונות, v. preced.) there is a. tree in the sea-towns (Cyprus), וכ׳ שמו וח׳ ed. (Ms. M. יחנון) its name is h., and a chip thereof is taken and put into the nostrils (of the sick ewe), that it may sneeze and be released of the worms in the head (v. L5w Pf. p. 21 3 a. quotations). --- Y. ib. VV, 7c top it is a root ושמיה יחנונה its name is yahnunah.

חנופה f. (b. h. חנפה, some ed. הנפ׳; חנף) 1) hy- pocrisy, dishonesty, fattery. Sot. 41b ח׳ בו שיש אדם a man in whom there is insinceu ity. Ib. ח׳ של אגרופה the power of flattery (towards Agrippa). Ib. 42a ח׳ . . . עדה a com- munity in which insincerity (lattery to power) prevails. Snh. 52a לקרח שהחניפו ח׳ בשביל because they fattered Korah. Kidd. 49b וכ׳ וגסות ח׳ cringing submission (to power) and haughtiness (towards the weak); a. e. -- 2) faithlessness to religion, apostasy. Gen. חנט (b. h.) 1) to assume shape, form a texture; (of trees) to show a distinct shape of fruits,to form fruits; (of fruits and leaves) to assume a distinct shape (v. חנטה). R. Hash. 14b פירותיו שחנטו אתרוג Ms. M. (ed. פירותיה) an Ethrog-tree whose fruits were formed before the fifteenth ofShebat. Ib. וכ׳ שחנטו אילן a tree whose fruits &c. Y. Shebi. חנט m., חנטה f. (preced. wds.) formation of fruits or leaves. Y. Shebi. IV, end 35c, a. e. הוא שלשולן חנטן their formation of chains is what in other trees is the formation of fruits. Ib. V, beg. 35d חנטו עקרתה thou disregardest the time of its formation. Y. Maasr.
