12 Apr. The Elaphe obsoleta collected by Tony Mollhagen died this morning. Was it in a gallon jar with the E. obsoleta collected by myself with a T. carolina. Also in the jar were 3 nestling Sylvilagus disgorged by a snake, presumably the one that died. 22 Apr. Returning home after science open house at the college, shortly after 9 pm, and found a Bufo woodhousei hopping in the dirt road on the Bird Farm. Warm and dry. Blue Jays heard around today for first time this year. Chickadee still about. 2 May Drove with the family to the Smoky Hill River, 4 mi. S Antonino, Ellis Co., Kans. Shallow stream with shale-limestone cliffs on the N side with some willows along the base and, on S side, willows and cottonwoods on fairly level land. Same locality visited on 7 March (where locality data somewhat off). Collected 1 Rana pipiens, 1 Acris crepitans, 1 Trionyx spinifera, 1 Cnemidophorus sexlineatus, and 1 Natrix sipedon. Hot (in lower 90's) and very windy. The Natrix was first seen swimming underwater upstream--small but pugnacious.
