3 Dec. (p.2) and other on SE slope. 9 Dec. Drove to the jct. of the Strauss Rd. and NM 273 and drove up Strauss Road 1/2 mi. Position, then, is approx. 4 mi. E & 1 m. S Strauss, Dona Ana Co., N. Mex. Set out 28 Museum Specials and 2 rat traps. Are large hummocks of mesquite and sand and considerable numbers of Dalia, Atriplex canescens, Yucca elata. Substratum is very sandy for the most part. Lepus californicus seen. Considerable sign about. Area all in all appears quite lush. Cloudy but quite warm. 10 Dec. Returned to the trapping area and picked up traps. Light to heavy rains during night, but mild. Captured 1 Mus musculus from the base of a mesquite hummock, 2 Neotoma albigula (one from above hummock which had a nest in the mesquite; other from base of Yucca), 2 Dipodomys merriami, and 6 Perognathus penicillatus. One trap dragged away about 15 ft and a skunk -sized ? scat left on it (tape-worm fragments visible). Sylvilagus auduboni (presumably) & L. californicus both seen. 12 Dec. Drove with Anita and the girls to about 5 mi. E & 1 mi. N Silver city, Grant Co., N. Mex., via Las Cruces, Deming, Hurley, etc. Pinyon-juniper with live oak, Mt. Mahogany, Apache Plume, etc. Hunted some,
