D. lyor. twentieth Day of fune one thoufand feven hundred and two, make a true and particular Entry in Wri- ting under his and their refpeftive Hands, at the next Salt Office to their refpeftive Pits, Works, or Places of Habitation, of the Number and Situation of his and their refpeftive Salt Pits and Salt Works, and of the Number of Pans in each Salt Work, and of the Number and Situation of every Stdrehoufe, Warehoufe, and other Place, by him or them made ufe of, for the making, refining, or keeping of Salt Penaltj', or Rock Salt, on Pain of forfeiting the Sum of forty Pounds ; and all and every Maker of S^lt, Refiner of Rock Salt, and Proprietor of any Salt Works or Salt Pits, who, after the faid four and twentieth Day of ^jiine one thoufand feven hundred and two, fhall ereft, fer up, or make ufe of any Salt Work, Salt Pit, Salt Pan, Storehoufe, Warehoufe, or other Place, for the making, laying, refining, or keeping Penalty on erea- of Salt or Rock Salt, without giving Notice thereof at the next Salt Office, fhall forfeit and lofe for &? whh^t'No' ^^^^' ^'^'^ Work, Salt Pit, Salt Pan, Storehoufe, Warehoufe, or other Place fo erefted, fet ^up, or ticesiven""^ "' r^^-de ufe of, without fuch Notice as aforefaid, the Sum of forty Pounds, II. And be it further enafted by the Authority aforefaid, That it fhall and may be lawful for the feveral ©fficermayen- Officers for the faid Duties, to enter into all and every the Works, Warehoufes, Storehoufes, and other ter into Salt Places made ufe of by any Maker, Refiner, or Importer of Salt, or Proprietor of Rock Salt, for the Work, &c better looking after the faid Duties, and preventing Frauds therein ; and if any Salt Maker, Importer of Salt, or any Refiner or Proprietor of Rock Salt, after the faid four and twentieth Day of June, fliall, upon due Requeft or Demand made by the Officers for the faid Duties, in the Day-time, or in the Night Penalty on in the Prefence of a Conftable or other lawful Officer of the Peace, refufe to permit fuch Officer to Refufal. enter and come into his or their Works, Warehoufes, Storehoufes, or other Place by him or them made ufe of for making, laying, refining, or keeping of Salt, fuch Maker and Importer of Salt, and the Re- finer or Proprietor of Rock Salt, refpeftively, fhall forfeit and lofe for every fuch Offence the Sum of forty Pounds. ' III. And whereas great Quantities of Salt are frequently found in the Cuflody or PofTeffion of feveral ' Perfons who live near the Salt Works or Sea Coalts, which Salt is not duly entred, nor any Duties paid • ' for the fame, and if difcovered by the Officers for the faid Duties, the Perfons in whofe Cuftody or Pof- ' feffion the fame is found, pretend that the fam.e doth not belong to them, fo that the Penalties by Law ' impofed on the Perfons that landed fuch Salt, or removed the fame from the Salt Work, without Entry ' or Payment of Duties, cannot be inflifted on fuch Offenders :' For Remedy whereof be it ena£ted by "Penalty on Salt the Authority aforefaid. That every Perfon in whofe Cuftody or Poffeffion any Salt fhall be fo found, found, and not ^j^j^h hath not been duly entred, and the Duties thereof paid, or fecured to be paid, fhall, in cafe the paid! ' °' "'^ '"^"^^ ^'^ foreign Salt, be liable to the fame Penalties and Forfeitures, as if fuch Perfon had landed the fame without Entry or Payment of Duties, or giving Security for the fame ; or in cafe the fame fhall be Englift} Salt, then to be liable to fuch Penalties and Forfeitures, as if fuch Perfon had removed fuch Salt from the Salt Works, without Entry, or paying or fecuring the Duties thereof, and without any Ticket or Licence obtained for removing the fame, unlefs the Perfon or Perfons, in whofe Cuftody or Poffeffion fuch Salt fhall be found, fhall make it appear, upon the Trial or Hearing of the Information for fuch Offence, that he bought fuch foreign or Englijh Salt of a Maker, Retailer, or Importer of Salt, and of whom he To bought the fame. ' IV. And whereas feveral Perfons, efpecially Salt Carriers, do frequently carry Salt from the Salt ' Works and Storehoufes of the Makers of Salt, without Entry or Payment of Duties, or giving Security ' for the fame ; and when they find themfelves purfued by the Officers for the faid Duties, with Force ' obftruft and hinder the Officers from making Seizures thereof, and frequently beat and abufe them, ' v/hereby they are very much difcouraged in Performance of their Duties ; and fometimes the faid Per- ' fons fcatter the faid Salt on the Ground, or caft the fame into Water, to prevent the Seizure thereof;- ' and the faid Offenders being_for the moft part very poor, are not able to pay the Penalties by Law im- ' pofed on them for fuch Oftences, and fometimes before fuch Penalties can be adjudged againft them, Salt Carriers re- ' make their Efcapes to remote Parts, and cannot be found:' For Remedy thereof be it enafted by the rnoving Salt be- Authority aforefaid. That if any Salt Carrier, or other Perfon or Perfons whatfoever, fhall, from and Officermav fdze ^'^'^'^ '■'^^ ^^^ ^'^^'^ ^"'^ twentieth Day of June., remove or convey any Salt from any Salt Works, or Place the fdme/&c. thereunto belonging, without due Entry of the fame, and Payment of the Duties thereof, or giving Se- curity for fuch Duties, or without Warrant, Ticket, or Licence for carrying or removing the fame, that then and in every fuch Cafe, it fhall be lawful for the Officers for the faid Duties, not only to feize the Salt fo removed, but alfo to apprehend the faid Offender or Offenders, and carry Jiim, her and them before one of her Majefty's Juftices of the Peace of the County or Place where the Ottence fhall be com- on Nonpayment mitted : And in cafe the faid Offence fhall be proved before the faid Juftice of the Peace, and the Offender of the PenaltieF, Qy- Offenders fliall not forthwith pay down the Penalties by the Laws relating, to the faid Duties impofed
