An A£t for erecting Piers in and for repairing and keeping in Repair the Harbour of Little Hampton, called Arundel Port, in the County of Sujjex. P R. HEREAS it is a great Encouragement to Trade and Navigation to have good Harbours and Ports for receiving of Shipping : And whereas the Harbour of Little Hampton, called Arun- ' del Port, in the County of Sujfex, was heretofore a fafe Harbour, and capable of receiving Ships and ' Veffels of a conliderable Burthen, but a Beach being now thrown up by the Sea, the faid Harbour is ' thereby become choaked up, and the Navigation of the River Arun, commonly called Arundel River^ ' obftructed, and the faid Harbour rendred almoft ufelefs, to the great Damage of the Inhabitants of
- the faid Town of Arundel: And whereas the faid Harbour cannot be reftored, improved and pre-
' ferved, unlefs a Chanel be cut through the faid Beach and Piers, and Locks erected and made in pro- ' per Places : And whereas the Inhabitants of the faid Town are unable to raife a fufhcient Sum of f Money to defray the Expence of carrying on, compleating and preferving fo ufeful and beneficial an ' Undertaking, without the Aid and Affiftance of Parliament :' May it therefore pleafe your Majefty that it may be enacted, &c. " After 24 June 1733, the following Duties to be paid. For every Chaldron of Coals or other Goods " paying Duty by the Chaldron, (hipped or landed in the Port of Arundel, is. For every Tun of Salt " and other Goods paying Duty or Freight by the Tun, 1 s. For every Load of Timber or converted " Timber, is. For every Load of Tan or Bark, zs. For every hundred of Spars, Ufers or Staves,. is. For every hundred of (ingle Deals, is. 6d. For every hundred of double Deals, zs. and for " every hundred of three Inch Deals, zs. 6d. For every Quarter of Wheat and other Grains and* " Seeds, 3 d. For every Load of Flower or Meal, 1 s. and for every Load of Bran, 6d. For every " Hogfhead of Wine or other Liquors, is. For every Hogfhead of Sugar and dry Goods, gd. For " every Tierce, 6d. and for every Barrel of Pitch or other Goods in Barrels, 4^. For every Bundle, " &e. of Hemp, Linen, Woollen, Glafs, Fruits and Earthen Ware, 1 d. per Hundred. For every " hundred of Allom, Cheefe and other Goods, paying Duty or Freight per hundred Weight, 1 d. For ." every hundred Feet of paving Stone or Marble, zs. For every thoufand of Tiles, Bricks or Ciin- " kers, 1 s. For every Grofs of Bottles, 3 d. For every Barge or Craft palling through each Lock, 1 s. " For all Goods not enumerated one twelfth Part of the ufual Freight from London to Arundel. For " every Britijh Ship which (hall load or unload (Fifhing Veffels excepted) 3d. per Tun. For every " Britijh Ship which (hall fail into the Harbour, and neither load nor unload there, id. zq. pet Tun. " For every Foreign Ship, and for Goods imported and exported in foreign Bottoms, double Duties. " No Veffels to be cleared at the Cuftom-houfe, without a Certificate that thefe Duties are paid. On ." Juftices Certificate that all Charges are reimburfed, half of the Duties to ceafe. Commiffioners may " appoint a Perfon to direct the mooring and ballafting of Veffels.
