194 APPENDIX. Journeymen Printers, and Founders of Letters to be imployed, Who only may XII. What number XIII. And be it alfo enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That no Printer or Printers, (except the of Apprentices Kings Printers) nor Founder or Founders of Letters for Printing, (hall take or retain anymore or greater eynuyie am. ^^p,. f Apprentices, than is herein after limited and appointed, (that is to fay) Every Mafter- Printer, and Mafter -Founder of Letters for Printing, that is or hath been Matter or Upper-Warden of his Com- pany, may have Three Apprentices at one time and no more; And every Mafter-Printer, and Mafter- Founder of Letters for Printing, that is of the Livery of his Company, may have two Apprentices at one time and no more; And every Mafter-Printer, and Mafter-Founder of Letters for Printing, of the Yeomanry of his Company, may have one Apprentice at one time and no more, neither by Copart- nerihip, binding at the Scriveners, nor any other way whatfoever; Neither (hall it be lawful for any Mafter-Printer or Mafter-Founder of Letters, when any Apprentice or Apprentices (hall run or be put away, to take another Apprentice or other Apprentices in his or their place or places, unlefs the name or names of him or them fo gone away, be rafed out of the Hall -Book, and never admitted again. XIV. And becaufe a great part of the fecret Printing in Corners hath been caufed for want of Orderly Imployment for Journeymen- Printers, The faid feveral Mafter-Printers, and Mafter-Founders of Let- ters for Printing fo to be allowed, as aforefaid, are hereby required to take fpecial Care, That all Jour- neymen-Printers, and Journeymen-Founders of Letters for Printing, who are lawfully free of the faid refpeclive Myftenes, be fet on Work, and Imployed in their refpefitive Trades; And if any fuch Jour- neyman-Printer, and Journeyman-Founder of Letters, being of honeft and good behaviour, and able in his Trade, do want Imployment, he (hall repair to any of the faid Mafter-Printers, or Mafter-Founders of Letters reflectively for the time being, who thereupon (hall receive him or them into Work, if fuch Mafter-Printer or Mafter-Founder of Letters have not a Journeyman already, although fuch Mafter- Printer or Mafter-Founder of Letters refpecfively, with his Apprentice or Apprentices be able without the help of the faid Journeyman to difcharge his own Work, upon pain that every Mafter-Printer, and Mafter-Founder of Letters refpeclive] y, refilling to receive fuch Journeyman repairing to him, as afore- faid, (hall forfeit Five pounds, to be recovered by Bill, Plaint or Information in any Court of Record, wherein no Effoign, Wager at Law, Priviiedge or Protection (hall be admitted; the one moiety of which forfeiture (hall go the Kings Majefty, his Heirs and Succeffors, and the other moiety to the In- former who (hall fue for the fame within fix months next after the faid Offence committed; And if any Journeyman, or Journeymen-Printers, or Founders of Letters for Printing, (hall refufe Imployment, being offered to him or them by any Mafter-Printer, or Mafter-Founder of Letters reflectively, or neglect it when he or they have undertaken it, he or they fo refufing or neglecting, (hall fuffer three months Imprifonment at the leaft, without Bail or Mainprize, upon conviction of fuch his faid refufal or neglect by two Witnefles, before any one or more Juftice or juftices of the Peace, who are hereby impow- ered to hear and examine the faid Offence, and to commit the faid Offender and Offenders to the Com- mon Gaol of the County where he or they (hall be apprehended : And no Mafter-Printer, or Mafter- Founder of Letters for Printing, (hall from henceforth imploy either to work at the Cafe or Prefs, or otherwife about his Printing, any perfon or perfons than fuch only as are Englifhmen and Freemen, or the Sons of Freemen, or Apprentices to the faid Trades or Myfteries of Printing, or Founding of Letters for Printing refpecfively. And for the better difcovering of Printing in Corners without Licence,' Be it further enacted ShT^fo""^ ky the Authority aforefaid, That one or more of the Meffengers of his Majefties Chamber, by Warrant fpe°cfed Books under his Majefties Sign-Manual, or under the Hand of one or more of his Majefties Principal Secreta- »iid Papers. ries of State, or the Mafter and Wardens of the faid Company of Stationers, or any one of them, (hall have power and authority with a Conftable, to take unto them fuch afliftance as they (hall think need- ful, and at what time they (hall think fit, to fearch all Houfes and Shops where they (hall know, or up- on fome probable reafon iufpect any Books or Papers to be printed, bound or ftitched, efpecially Print- ing-houfeS; Book-fellers Shops and Warehoufes, and Book-binders Houfes and Shops, and to view there what is imprinting, binding or (titching, and to examine whether the fame be Licenfed, and to demand a fight of the faid Licence; and if the faid Book fo imprinting, binding or ditching, (hall not be Li- cenfed, then to feize upon fo much thereof, as (hall be found imprinted, together with the feveral Offenders, and to bring them before one or more Juftices of the Peace, who are hereby authorized and required to commit fuch Offenders to Prifon, there to remain until they (hall be tried and acquitted, or convicted and punifhed for the faid Offences : And in cafe the faid Searchers (hall up- on their faid Search, find any Book or Books, or part of Books unlicenfed, which they (hall fufpect. to contain matters therein contrary to the Doctrine or Difcipline of the Church of England, or againft the State and Government; Then upon fuch fufpicion to feize upon fuch Book or Books, or part of Book or Books, and to bring the fame unto the faid Lord Archbifhop of Canterbury, and Lord Bifhop of London for the time being, or one of them, or to the Secretaries of State, or one of them respectively, who (hall take fuch further courfe for the fupprefling thereof, as to them or any of fhem (hall feem fit.
