She was b. 11 Sap, 1862.^]- Family Estates.— These, in 1S83. consisted of 22,600 acres, co. Forfar, and 270, co. Perth, besides 1,81)0 in Herts, and 16 in Sussex. York ; was 4. 6 April 1S01 ; entered the army, 1S20 ; served in Syria, 1840-41, where lie whs wounded : C.B. 1842, being shortly afterwards Consul Gen. for Syria ; Charge d'affaires at Constantinople in the critical period. 1853-54, acting as Princ. Coinmiasr. at the head quarters of the French army during the Crimean campaign, being present lit most of the assaults and on one occasion wounded. K.C.B.. 1856 : was in Command of the Central India Field Force, 1857-58, during the Sepoy mutiny, where his brilliant services included the capture of the garrison of Jhansi (held by 11,000 men) (°) He was one of the 8 " Jubilee " Barons, of whom see a list in vol. ii, p. 238, note "a," ,u6 " Cheylesmore." ^( b ) The Barony was of the same designation as that conferred on his great uncle in ( c ) It is said that when the Chevalier St. George slept here in 1715, more than 80 beds were made up there for his retinue.
