common-wealth, which the true Church never wanted. But to say truth, they have neither Martha nor Marie. Our Lord give them grace to see their miserie. If ours were not answerable to their profession, or were degenerated, why have they no new ones? If our Churches Votaries vowed unlawful things, Chastitie, Povertie, Obedience, Pilgrimage: what other Votaries or lawful vowes have they? Vowes and votaries. For, to offer voluntarily by vow (besides the keeping of Gods commandements, whereunto we are bound by precept and promise in our Baptisme) our soules, bodies, goods, or any other acceptable thing to God, is an acte of soveraigne worship belonging to God only: and there was never true religion without such vowes and Votaries. If there be none in their whole Church that professe contemplation, or that vow any thing at al to God voluntarily, neither in their bodies nor in their goods; God and the world know they have no Church nor religion at al.
Chap. XI.
AND it came to passe, when he was in a certaine place praying, as he ceased, one of his Disciples said to him: Lord teach us to pray, as John also taught his Disciples. 2And he said to them: Mat. 6, 9.* When you pray, say, Father, sanctified be thy name. Thy kingdom come. 3Our daily bread give us this day, 4and forgive us our sinnes, for because ourselves also doe forgive every one that is in debt to us. And lead us not into temptation. And in a votive Masse against the Pagans.5And he said to them: Which of you shal have a freind, and shal goe to him at midnight, and shal say to him, Freind, lend me three loaves, 6because a freind of mine is come out of his way to me, and I have not what to set before him: 7and he from within answering saith: Trouble me not, now the doore is shut, and my children are with me in bed; I can not rise and give thee. 8And if he shal persevere knocking, I say to you, although he wil not rise and give him because he is his friend, yet for his importunitie he wil rise, and give him as many as he needeth. 9 Mat. 7, 7.* And I say to you, Ask, and it shal be given you: seeke, and you shal find: knock, and it shal be opened to you. 10For every one that asketh, receiveth: and he that seeketh, findeth: and to him that knocketh, it shal be opened. 11And which of you if he aske his father bread, wil he give him a stone? or a fish, wil he for a fish give him a serpent? 12Or if he aske an egge, wil he reach him a scorpion? 13If you then being naught, know how to give good guiftes to your children, how much more wil your father from Heaven give the good Spirit to them that aske him? ✠
