Forbidden and Permitted Wood on a Holiday

Paragraph 1 - One may not chop wood from the beams that are ready for a building, but not from beams that broke on the holiday, even if they were in bad shape before the holiday and were close to breaking. However, if they broke before the holiday and it is impossible to burn them without chopping, one may chop them into large pieces. One cannot chop with an axe, a saw, or a sickle, but only with a kupitz (meaning the butcher's knife, and there are some who make it with two heads, such that it is similar to an axe. Rash"i) using the narrow side [of the kupitz] and not the wide side. There are some who are stringent even with regards to a kupitz because we aren't experts in what it is; these people only allow a knife.

Paragraph 2 - Slightly large pieces of wood that are fitting for burning without chopping may not be chopped at all. Some even forbid breaking them by hand.

Paragraph 3 - One may not bring wood from the field even if it is assembled there from the previous evening [before the holiday]. But one may gather what is in front of him in the field (similarly in the field, he may take what is in front of him) (Beit Yosef and Ramba"m) and light there. One may bring from that which was collected together in the private domain, even if it is not enclosed for dwelling, as long as it is enclosed and it is within the tchum. If one of these conditions is missing, it is muktzah.

Paragraph 4 - Regarding leaves of shrubbery and leaves of grapevines, even if they are gathered in a karpef [courtyard-like enclosure], because the wind scatters them, they are treated as if they are scattered and are forbidden [to collect and burn]. If one placed a heavy object on them before the holiday, they are considered ready [and can be burned].

Paragraph 5 - Wood that fell from a tree on the holiday cannot be burned. (And see below Chapter 507 Paragraph 2).

Paragraph 6 - Things that broke on the holiday cannot be burned because they are nolad ["born" on the holiday and thus ineligible for use]. (If one burned these things, it is forbidden to turn the fire after they are partially lit because it is then a fragment of an object, unless one put much prepared wood on top) (The Maggid Chapter 2 and the Ra"n chapter 2 of Beitzah). However, one may burn whole objects or objects that broke when it was still day [before the holiday].

Paragraph 7 - The shells of almonds and nuts eaten before the holiday can be burned on the holiday. If they are eaten on the holiday, their shells cannot be burned. Rem"a: The nuts and almonds themselves also may not be burned, unless they are still in their shells (Beit Yosef). Lanterns that remain from the first day of the holiday that went out can be relit, even on the second day of Rosh Hashana or on a holiday that falls after a Shabbat (the Ros"h and the Mordechai at the beginning of Beitza and Beit Yosef).
