The length of the knife for shechita
שיעור סכין של שחיטה

What is the length of the knife with which he shechted? Any length (provided) it's not a thing so short that it punctures and can't cut, like the head of a small chisel and so forth. A needle, even if it's a little wider like those of leather workers with which they cut [?] the thread, one may not shecht with it (Tur). And since we do not known a prescribed length, one who shechts with a short knife needs to take care and measure by his mental estimate that when he draws it back and forth he doesn't bear down [DRS]. But with an excessively short knife, one may not shecht.
- Rema: Whoever cannot estimate should take the amount of two necks of that thing that he's shechting (Mordekhai in the name of R"H). Some say estimate fourteen thumb-breadths, which has a scriptural hint in (I Sam. 14:34), "Ushechatetam BaZeH/ And slaughter them in this [place]," [and BZH is] gematria 14 (ibid, and Shechitot Yeshanim).
כמה הוא אורך הסכין ששחט בו – כל שהוא. (רק) שלא יהא דבר דק שנוקב ואינו שוחט כמו ראש האזמל הקטן וכיוצא בו. ובמחט: אפילו הוא רחב קצת כאותן של רצענים שחותכין בו החוט – אין שוחטין בו (טור). וכיון דלא ידעינן שיעורא: השוחט בסכין קטנה – צריך ליזהר ולשער לפי אומד דעתו שכשיוליך ויביא בה: שלא ידרוס, אבל בקטנה יותר מדאי – לא ישחוט.
- הגה: ומי שלא יוכל לשער – יקח כמלא אורך שני צוארים של אותו דבר ששוחטין (מרדכי בשם ר"ח). ויש אומרים לשער בארבעה עשר אצבעות, ורמז לזה, שנאמר: ושחטתם "בזה" מנין י"ד (שם, ושחיטות ישנים).
