Interwiki

[edit]

Please do not delete interwiki links. If they are wrong correct them. Wikidata does not support interwiki links between translations. If they have been added at Wikidata, then Wikidata will remove them, and we do not want to lose the interwiki links. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:32, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

The links on Wikidata are wrong, and will be deleted. Wikidata does not support those kind of interwiki links. They were added there in error. Each data item for a published work is for a single language. A translation into another language is a separate publication with different data, including language of the translation, date of publication, translator, publisher, place of publication, etc. This cannot be all placed in a single data item. Each translation must be a separate data item on Wikidata. The links are therefore wrong on Wikidata and, sooner or later, will be removed. By deleting the interwiki links here, you ensured that we would lose that information.
For deleting content, after being warned not to do so, you have been blocked here for a time. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:38, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
i'm following all the wikidata items of the suras (chapters) of the quran, so if the links are erased i can revert my edit. if you'd like i can create categories for all chapters and connect them to wikidata, the categories would include all translations that would exist in wikisource (that's what i did in hewikisource).
i deleted you before seeing the warning, but in any case i'll take a break waiting for your answer. melo kol haaretz kevodi (talk) 19:42, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
You are following items that were set up incorrectly on Wikidata. I have set up Q31201164 to show you how the translations of works are supposed to be set up and linked on Wikidata. There are many incorrect items that remain to be corrected.
As for categories, en-Wikisource does not use categories like that. We do not create categories for chapters or sections of works. Some other Wikisource projects do this, but we generally do not. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:52, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
then how should someone find there way to the translation to english frm another wiki? melo kol haaretz kevodi (talk) 20:00, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
For now, there must be interwiki links on each Wikisource. Wikidata does not support interwiki links between translations on Wikisource. This is why you should not remove interwiki links on Wikisource.
I have raised the issue time and again, and some Wikisource projects are working on an extension that will fix the problem. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:13, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
should i do this with all chapters? melo kol haaretz kevodi (talk) 20:03, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes. For all chapters, and for all translations of any work in another language. For Wikisource pages, each translation of a work into a different language must have a separate data item.
Q241077 is an example of a Greek play where this has been done. ll the translations are listed as "edition(s)". There are also Wikisource interwiki links, but follow the links and look at what they contain. They are lists of local translations (like a disambiguation page, but for a single work), and not copies of the work themselves. The individual translations are linked as "edition(s)", as I showed you before. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:13, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
The interwiki link to ar-wikisource is the original, in any case, tomorrow i’ll probably work on creating the wikidata items and connecting them as edition (though i might try and recruit a bot to do that so it may be delayed.
Not all suras have interwiki links not connected to wikidata like the one you reverted me, i can add them, but only if i’m not blocked. melo kol haaretz kevodi (talk) 20:28, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Now that we've had a chance to work through a conversation, and you understand the situation, I can unblock you. Note: The Arabic copies may or may not be the "original". The text on the Arabic Wikisource probably comes from a specific authoritative version with specific publication data. However, if you cannot find the relevant data at the Arabic Wikisource, then it may be necessary to leave it on the main data item. I have had to do that with the Greek plays, because the Greek Wikisource does not give the publication data for their Greek editions. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:37, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
The main difference between versions of the quran is the division to ayat in every chapter, i doubt arwikisource is gonna upload any other version. I'll try to start working here tomorrow if i can (it's almost midnight). thanks, melo kol haaretz kevodi (talk) 20:44, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
EncycloPetey, i got a bot to deal with the items in wikidata. at some point i might deal with connecting other languages, which are connected only to first few suras, and then add local interwikis here also to those languages. I'll be happy if you can find the quran in Greek wikisource and connect it to wikidata items (though if you give me the link to first of a series i can probably get a bot to do the hard work. melo kol haaretz kevodi (talk) 10:09, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'll give that a try, but can't be sure what I'll find. I have some knowledge of ancient Greek, but a translation of the Qur'an would be in mediaeval or modern Greek. I'm also unfamiliar with the various names for the sections of the Qur'an, and don't know how they might be rendered in a Greek translation, or whether they're even all present on el-Wikisource, but will see if I can manage and let you know. Thanks for doing this. It is a huge task to work through any set of works, and repairing/connecting a major religious book like the Qur'an will be an important step forward. --EncycloPetey (talk) 13:27, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Greek Wikisource doesn't seem to have a copy. I searched for various possible spellings of Qur'an in Greek, and for possible relevant categories. I also tried looking through possible relevant links via Greek Wikipedia, but found nothing. Some major works still don't exist on el-Wikisource, and this may be one of them. --EncycloPetey (talk) 14:12, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'll try asking other Greek speaking wikipedeans. Thanks for trying. I'm working slowly on adding the interwikis partially waiting for a bot that is to run and add some missing links to wikidata. melo kol haaretz kevodi (talk) 15:53, 3 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
