Complete English Translation[edit]

There is a complete English translation by Burton Watson available for free in a government website in the form of a PDF. I'm wondering if it would be possible to import this translation, since while the text itself is thousands old, the translation was published in 1961 and the translator died in 2017 KBarnaby (talk) 04:37, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@KBarnaby: It depends. For English Wikisource we need the text to be in the public domain in the United States. If the translation was first published in the United States, it could be in the public domain if it was published without a copyright notice or if the copyright was not renewed. If it was published outside the US, it could be in the public domain in the United States if it was in the public domain in its home country on 1 January 1996. For details see Help:Public domain. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 17:27, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately I now see that it is not in the public domain. I am going to translate the chapters myself (if there are any requirements on that let me know), thanks for replying! KBarnaby (talk) 15:09, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
This is possible, but it can be quite challenging for an unexperienced contributor. A colleague has recently described the process at WS:Scriptorium/Help#Original translation, which I recommend to read. Of course, I or other contributors can help with technical difficulties in any phase of the process if needed. The best place to ask for help is at WS:Scriptorium/Help. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 21:52, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
