I Am a Cat (well, only at weekends)[edit]

Thanks for helping to complete I Am a Cat. If you are interested, it would be even better to complete this work by proofreading against the scanned copy at Index:I am a Cat (1906).djvu, since that allows other users to follow your hard work by "validating" the text by comparing against the scanned page.

There's lots of words at H:Proofread, but the very short summary is to enter the text on each page at that index, and then you "transclude" it to I Am a Cat/Chapter 1 (or 2, etc) using a code like <pages index="I am a Cat (1906).djvu" from=15 to=43 />.

Anyway, thank you for the contributions already made! But I hope you we can get you addicted and you stick around!

And on that note, an advert: do come along to the WS:Monthly Challenge and have a look. If there are any works you'd like to see included, drop a nomination at the nominations page and it will probably be included next month if it looks interesting. In January, we have a special edition challenge with a focus on works that enter the public domain then: the simplest condition is anything published in 1926. So if you know of a such a work that you'd like to see, come and tell us! ^_^ Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 23:16, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Inductiveload: Hello again, thanks for this introduction and guidance where to go next. :) For the specific case of "I Am a Cat", there is only one problem with what you have suggested (i.e., proofreading against the scanned copy, validation, etc.): it would appear that my text is not sourced from the same file as the original uploader's. I simply have the entire book in EPUB form, so I just copy-pasted the text lol. The text is very clearly exactly the same as the Wikisource version for the first two chapters, to the letter. Seeing as both are also generally public domain almost worldwide, I thought to upload a continuation in case anyone (or myself) wanted to read it. This is apparently problematic though, for the reasons mentioned already; plus, I can't seem to see any pages in the .djvu Index beyond Chapter 2 — if I'm not mistaken, the edition the uploader used actually just ends at that point. Maybe as a consequence, the table of contents also doesn't match up with my own. (E.g., the 4th chapter is not included in the 'first volume' on my copy.) Do you have any advice what I could do?
Meanwhile, with regard the the monthly challenge, it would be my pleasure to help out; I already know how rewarding the grind feels from Wiktionary ^^ so I feel I could try my hand at that too. Thanks for bringing my attention to it! Kiril kovachev (talk) 00:15, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, interesting. It's often the case that there are multiple edition, and it's also often the case that some scans (particularly by Google) are incomplete, damaged or generally a mess. You can still "copydump" the text you have. In my opinion, any complete text is better than incomplete works. But, ideally we would be looking for a decent scan to use. Though, to be fair, sometimes no such scan exists, in which case we just make do without and hope one turns up later! Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 00:33, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
