Which license should I use for this?[edit]

Hello there,

I'm currently validating this document (on the 22d Intelligence Squadron) and there's no license information. I've checked the license information for the file on Commons, and its licensed as PD-USGov-Military-Air_Force (which renders as "This image or file is a work of a U.S. Air Force Airman or employee, taken or made as part of that person's official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image or file is in the public domain."). The closest license I can find on Wikisource is PD-USGov, however when used PD-USGov one only says it is public domain in the US, whereas PD-USGov-Military-Air_Force doesn't specify a country where the work is PD.

Can anyone help?

We don't bother sub-dividing the primary license like Commons typically does. On Commons, the license breaks down like this in reality...
PD-USGov
-Military
-Air_Force
That just means the Air Force is part of the Military that is part of the U.S. Federal Government.
All you really need to be copyright "compliant" is to display the {{PD-USGov}} banner template for any branch, department or agency found within the U.S. Federal Gov't and that is how we approach this on WS.... in other words - we don't try to categorize works via their license templates in addition to the normal categorization method.

As for the country part - its not what a banner says or doesn't say - its the supporting law behind the exemption that matters. Anything that starts with PD-USGov is understood to be the product of some Federal employee's official duties and all such creations are copyright free (with a few minor exceptions from NASA and junk). The Wiki-foundation's servers are in the U.S. so the first license you'd need to insure covers the work properly would be for the U.S. viewership anyway. In this case, the primary U.S. and secondary all-the-other-nation(s) enjoy the same exemption (license) provided by U.S. law. hth. George Orwell III (talk) 12:57, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Update[edit]

You may have noticed I have been relatively inactive on Wikisource for the past few days. During this time I have been working on Wikipedia.
Some of you may be aware of Wikipedia's problems: a shrinking community that is now struggling to keep up with backlogs and so on. I have been working on WikiProject Notability, a project that essentially is meant to sort through what should and shouldn't be in Wikipedia. Its backlog currently stretches back to January 2008 and the article requiring attention currently number over 40,000. It has only has two active members (one of them myself).
To sum up: I am not considering nor can imagine abandoning WikiSource. However, Wikipedia's problems need attention, so I have been working on them. If anyone has any questions or wants me to do anything, please feel welcome to raise them on this page. I am monitoring my watchlist in Thunderbird and will be aware of any messages.
